I know a girl in my city who just turned 25 and has never worked in her LIFE! She still lives with her parents and all that. Girl is like a local celebrity in the rave/goth scene. She spends most of her time going to shows, parties, and doing photography/being photographed. She's pretty humble though and she realizes that soon enough she'll have to take care of her own damn self.

I don't think she's jealous. She actually has a point while traveling aboard and volunteer are great experience that doesn't really tell me how you're going to be as an employee. Are you reliable in a work setting? What's your work habits like?

And even little "random" jobs at American Eagle can give some you type of skills, customer service maybe? I mean being a manager at McDonald's tells me to a certain extent that your a responsible person....

I don't see the big deal. Some people just aren't meant for "real jobs." I'm sure she'll figure it out. I mean, good for her. I'd rather go to different countries than work, obviously! Sounds like good life experience while you're young. You have your whole entire life for work. If you can avoid working for so long, why not?

Euro, you need to get over yourself. You just sound like a jealous bitch. Volunteer work/experiences abroad can be just as good as paid jobs depending on the degree. I've been employed for the past few summers doing shit that has nothing to do with my degree. On the other hand, I have also spent plenty of time abroad in France. And I'm a French major. If anything, I think my experiences abroad will help me more than a job such as "campus furniture crew worker."

I had my first "real" job like a week after I turned 22. I don't think jobs like target & McDonalds would have changed my job prospects. I just wish I would have started working at the bank or interned earlier because it looks great on your resume because you're essentially responsible for $20,000 a day and private financial info. That says a lot about you.

If you say so. I just don't see that it's such a big deal. I had many friends in similar situations in college and they had no problems (or at least no more than everyone else) finding a job. My sister spends her summers volunteering with religious organizations in other countries, it has helped her in her job hunt. I think you are making a bigger deal out of this than is necessary.

I just feel bad for her because she's in for a huge shock. I think she's starting to realise that she can't just walk into any job because she has a degree. Employers are like, who cares? Person X has a degree AND tons of experience. And the languages don't really make any difference for most jobs. I think she's just totally in denial about how hard it is to get a job.
