Because once you buy something it is legally yours. It doesn't matter what is scrawled on the object. The sorority may own the rights to the name, but
they cannot control who wears their letters. Nobody outside the organization would be interested in wearing that stuff anyway.
Now it may be customary to turn in any Greek lettered stuff when you exit the sorority, but the sorority cannot legally force you to return merch you
purchased. You can even sell your Greek ring or badge on Ebay legally. They'll probably hate you even more for doing that, but there's nothing they
can do about it other than buy it back.
