.: Chapter VII :.
"Oh my, God, you are one crazy bitch!" Lily huffed. She adjusted the rearview mirror so that she could join eyes with Catalina. Cat, who sat in the backseat of Lily's Toyota, rolled her eyes. "You're just mad 'cause it wasn't you!" she laughed. Lily and Cat were joined by their friend Natalie, the schools music teacher. The three ladies laughed at Cat's response. The three were on their way to Lava Lounge, one of the hottest dance clubs in Atlanta. They made it a point to go out and be "anything other than teachers" on a monthly basis and tonight was the night. Now, cascading through the streets of downtown Atlanta, Lily and Natalie were mercilessly picking on Cat for her severe treatment toward Justin Timberlake. "You're damn right I'm mad! Why couldn't it have been me?" "Because you suck!" Nikki cut in. The ladies shared another laugh. Internally, Cat squirmed. Earlier that day, she had been confident in her feeling that staying clear of Justin Timberlake was a good thing. Cat's cousin, Zora, had dated Usher briefly after his relationship with Chilli, from TLC had ended. Ultimately, their tryst fell apart, a mixture of Usher's constant traveling, and his steadfast desire to keep Zora a secret from the world. Catalina was, of course, jumping the gun, as Justin had simply attempted friendly conversation. But "better to be safe than sorry" was a good motto. Zora wad devastated and depressed for weeks post break up and Cat was not going out like that. * * * "That chick is all over your shit," Trace declared, nudging Justin in the ribs. "Yeah, she's pretty hot," Justin agreed. He stood, leaning against one of the many shiny sculptures in the club, clad in a pair of khakis and a green William Rast t-shirt. The dimly lit room hid his identity from most, but those hip to Justin's recent relocation to "the ATL" were swarming like wasps. After surveying the landscape (per Trace's nagging), Justin had allowed in one pretty little raven-haired "wasp" of whom his friend now spoke. "What's her name?" Justin bit his lip and cringed in embarrassment. "I'm actually not too sure. I think it's Julia." "Pretty girl, with a pretty name," Trace confirmed. He raised his glass and gave an approving gesture to his friend. "Hit that shit." Laughing, Justin sipped his own drink. "Yeah, right." The men laughed because it was not Justin's style to hook up with random girls. Sure, he had had his share of "closed door" activities back in the day, but since dating Cameron, and then Jessica, he'd fallen out of that trend, deciding it a lot more entertaining to get a girl worked up, thinking she had a chance in hell and then graciously thanking her for her company and fading into the horizon. Julia, however, seemed like a genuinely nice person. Her breasts were covered, albeit not by much, and she could actually make it from one end of a sentence to the other without using the word, "like." After being mercilessly shot down that afternoon, Justin had made it his duty to find a woman similar in sophistication to Cat, but without the attitude - although he was still unsure why he cared so much. Justin of course knew that a night club was not a place wherein one might find a rogue scholar - but eye-candy and large breasts had their place in his world, as well. "Don't look now," Trace warned, nudging Justin in the side. "She's coming this way." Justin turned his head just in time to see the busty, scantily clad young woman making her way toward him. She smiled almost cockily to women nearby, several watching her every move, envious that she would be invited into Justin's "space." "Hey! Where'd you disappear to?" Julia drawled. This girl was quite obviously a local. Justin smiled. "No where. Getting a drink. Do you need another one?" Smiling, Julia nodded. "That would be great!" "Ok, be right back." He winked at the young lady and turned abruptly in search of the bar. * * * Catalina was officially pissed. Not a half hour after arriving at the club, Lily and Natalie had become distracted by the countless men present and left Cat to fend for herself. An hour alone plus six intoxicated men (and one woman) propositioning her had left Cat in less than an enjoyable mood. Eventually, she was able to track down Natalie, who stood, just off the dance floor, chatting it up with a stocky, red-headed man. She almost went over to force Natalie to pay attention to her, but thought the better of it. She deserved a good time since her break-up the previous Fall. Sighing, Cat, sat brought her drink straw to her mouth and sucked. Dry as a bone. "Damn it." Turning abruptly in the direction of the bar, Cat came in sore contact with some sort of human wall. Three inch heels and a gentle alcohol induced buzz, caused Cat to fall over like a Redwood when paired against the firm male frame. "Motherfucker," Cat mumbled in frustration. A large hand grabbed at her arm and almost effortlessly lifted her to her feet. "Are you ok?" Cat looked up to see a very attractive Black man staring down at her. He smiled. She smiled. "Yeah, I'm fine." * * * "Where's that chick?" Trace asked, taking a swig of his Miller Genuine. Justin rolled his eyes and smirked. "She got pissed off and left." "Oh yeah?" Trace inquired. "Yeah. She asked me if I wanted her number and I told her 'thanks, but that wasn't necessary' so she left," Justin shrugged. Trace sucked his teeth and brought the bottle of alcohol to his lips once more. "Ooh…you should have at least hit that first." Justin chuckled. "She actually became damn near 'fall-down' drunk, so I'm not really disappointed." He paused, as if thinking for a moment. "You ready to get out of here? I'm starving." Trace took a last swig from his bottle before answering. "Yeah. Let's go to 'Wendy's'." * * * "A teacher, huh? That sounds fun." Catalina giggled flirtatiously. "It is. I love it. What do you do?" Cat's mood had changed considerably. After a handful of dances and a fairly decent conversation, the "human wall," otherwise known as Robbie was escorting her to Lily's car. Natalie and Lily were well up ahead, laughing and exchanging "stupid boy" stories from the evening. "I'm in 'sales,'" Robbie answered quickly. The smile on Cat's face dropped some. She'd heard that one before. "Sales" almost always meant one of two things: retail or drugs. Neither one being particularly appealing in a male suitor. "Oh," she replied simply. Cat now had little interest in continuing her conversation with Robbie. Sure, he was very nice and very handsome but she wanted a man who could hold his own financially. He didn't need to make more money than she did but he had to make at least as much - and legally. Not because she expected him to take care of her but because she expected not to have to take care of him. "So can I get your number?" Robbie asked as he and Cat arrived at Lily's car. She looked to the vehicle uneasily, hoping that the dread and pleading showed clearly on her face. Her companions made teasing faces at her through the windows and she knew she would have to get out of this one on her own. "Actually, no… I don't give my number to guys I meet in clubs." That wasn't true at all, as up to that point, Cat had been mentally anticipating Robbie's inquiry into her phone number. He, however, didn't need to know that. "Oh. I see how it is," Robbie hissed. "You're one of them gold-diggin' bitches." Cat's eyes bulged, surprise and insult registering on her face. "What?" "You see a brother trying to make it legit and you don't want to know him because he's not 'up to your level?'" Robbie's entire demeanor changed, his face growing cloudy and cold. Cat understood his point and actually felt bad for feeling the way she did, but she wasn't going to settle, and if he wanted to be an asshole about it, so be it. Choosing to take the high road, Cat replied, "So now I gotta be a bitch? Whatever - I don't have to justify myself to you." She turned to the car. "Have a good night." "Yeah. You too, bitch." With that, Robbie turned and headed back to where his friends stood, waiting. Catalina climbed into the car and shut the door hard. Lily and Natalie started laughing immediately. Cat rolled her eyes. "Let's just go." |

.: Chapter VIII :.
((PART 1)) "Are y'all hungry? I'm hungry," Lily stated as she, Cat and Natalie made their way through the still busy streets of Atlanta. "I'm always hungry," Natalie declared. "You hungry there, 'bitch'?" she directed at Cat in the back seat. She was referencing the insult offered to Cat a few minutes earlier. Busy drafting a text message to her sister, Elena, Cat raised her head slightly. "What's that?" Natalie and Lily laughed. "Food?" Lily questioned from the drivers seat. She caught eyes with Cat through the rearview mirror. Nodding fiercely, Cat's eyes lit up. "Yes! I would love to drown my irritation in something greasy." "From a greasy man to greasy fries!" Natalie belted. "That guy was a jack-ass. You should have stayed with Justin!" Cat frowned and pounded the back of her seat. "You don't 'stay' with someone you're not with." That was definitely true but Natalie, in her own drunken way, did have a point. At least Justin hadn't disrespected her when she was rude to him. That had to say something about his character, didn't it? Cat made a vow that if she saw him at her Gran's again, she would apologize for having been so rude. And maybe she'd actually sit down and talk with him. That couldn't hurt anything. Plus it would be fun to throw it in her friends' faces. "Earth to Cat," Lily called, snapping Catalina from her thoughts. "Oh. Sorry." "I bet she's thinking about Juuuuustin!" Natalie cooed. Cat pounded on the back of Natalie's seat again. "Girl, shut the hell up! We need to get this drunk bitch something to soak up that alcohol." "Yes I'm drunk. And so what! Plus," corrected Natalie, "I believe you're the bitch, if memory serves." All three ladies laugh as Lily pulls her car into the parking lot of a Wendy's. * * * "Mmm, cheeseburger," Trace moaned, taking another bite of his sandwich. Justin chuckled as he munched on his french fries. Not one to partake in fast food on a regular basis, Justin's secret passion was and had for years been, Wendy's french fries and frosty's. Now, in the sparsely inhabited restaurant, he chomped happily on a large order of the greasy potatoes after greedily scarfing his frosty. "So, what are we doing tomorrow?" Trace asked between bites. "I thought we'd hit 'the Underground' and do some shopping. I need bed sheets and extra towels." "Sounds good, Martha Stewart. Maybe we'll see that chick…what's her name? Catherine? She can act like a bitch some more. That was fun to watch," Trace offered. Before Trace could even laugh at his own joke, he felt a sharp pain in his already bruised calf as Justin's foot made contact. "Ow. What the fuck, dude?" Trace winced. "Sorry. Reflex," Justin smirked, shoving several more fries into his mouth. He laughed as Trace mumbled insults at him, but immediately began coughing and choking as he spied Catalina and two other women enter the restaurant. "You ok?" Trace inquired, concern on his face. Justin reached across the table and grabbed Trace's Coke. Taking several sips, it was another ten or eleven seconds before he was able to answer his friend. "Cat," Justin gasped, bringing the straw to his lips once more. Sipping fiercely, he repeated, "Cat." Trace stared at Justin, confused. "What?" "You've got to be kidding me," Justin breathed. "Do you mind filling me in on what the hell you're talking about?" Trace pleaded with aggravation. "Cat. She just walked in." Trace's head whipped around and there she was, looking way too hot to be an elementary school teacher in a maroon, knee length, empire dress; hair resting loosely around her shoulders. "Damn, she is too fine," Trace breathed. "I hope you realize how much I'm resisting the urge to kick you again," said Justin, his eyes never leaving Cat and her friends. "I've known you my entire life and have never seen you like this," Trace stated, intrigued. "What do you mean?" Justin asked, eyes still on Cat. "I mean you know jack shit about this chick, but you're sitting here 'eye-stalking' her. Every time I say anything negative about her, you kick me - which by the way is real-fucking-gay - and to top it all off, she seems to be every fucking place you are." Rolling his eyes, Justin sighed heavily. "Your point?" "My point is that I think she's stalking you. And out of the millions of women you've come in contact with in your life, why does this one make you act like a pussy?" This time, Justin resisted the urge to resist the urge and kicked Trace once more. "Damn it, Justin!" Trace shouted, much louder than he had wanted. The commotion attracted the attention of all the six people in the restaurant, not including the staff in the back. And this time, when Justin looked over at Cat, he was startled to see her looking back. * * * Lily pulled into a parking spot and cut her engine. The three ladies piled out of the car and made their way inside the restaurant. "I'm sooo hungry," Lily moaned, holding her stomach. "For someone who eats so damn much, where does the food go?" Cat questioned. She'd asked this question before but her confusion remained as Lily, a barely five feet tall Taiwanese American woman always ate more than anyone - including men - and still remained petite. "All I have to do is smell food and I gain two pounds!" Cat continued. "Oh please!" Lily challenged. "I'd love to have curves like yours. And tits!" At the sound of the word, "tits," the elderly couple nearby, looked up at the women in disdain. Lily avoided their glare as Cat and Natalie fought back laughter. The three approached the counter and one at time, placed their orders. From there, they moved to the condiments. "Would you like some food with your ketchup?" Natalie asked Lily, who was busy filling her third mini cup with the red sauce. "La la la, I can't hear you," Lily answered. "She does have a point," Cat defended. "I've never seen an adult with so much ketchup." "Still not hearing you," Lily stated again. "Damn it, Justin!" Everyone in the restaurant, including Cat and her friends, turned their heads to the commotion. Mouth dropping open in surprise, Cat saw Justin (and Trace, of course) sitting at a booth in the corner. "You've got to be kidding me," Cat breathed. Just as those words escaped her, Justin's eyes locked places with her own. "What's up?" Natalie asked, approaching Cat. She followed her eyes and nearly dropped her tray in the process. "Wow. Is that…?" Natalie began. "Yeah." Cat stated, flatly. "And he's…?" Lily began. "Yeah." It could not have been more than ten seconds that Justin started at Cat and Cat and her friends stared at Justin. Natalie, still quite intoxicated, broke the tension. "Hi, Justin!" she called. Cat's head flew around to stare at her "friend" "Nat!" Cat hissed through clenched teeth. "Yeah, Nat. What are you doing?" Lily chimed. But Natalie ignored the other two women, lifted her tray and walked hastily toward Justin's table. Cat and Lily shared an uneasy look and followed. "Hi, Justin!" Natalie said again, once she reached the table. Justin and Trace shared a confused glance. "Um…hi?" Justin greeted uneasily. Natalie's smile grew, even while Cat seethed with embarrassment and Lily offered as much silent comforting as she could muster. Catalina groaned internally. A mildly religious person, Cat believed that God had a purpose for everything and apparently His current purpose was to force Cat to be nice to this man. How else could one explain why Justin was everywhere that Catalina was all the time? "How are you tonight?" Natalie continued her questioning. "Apparently not as good as you're doing," Trace piped in taking note of her obviously inebriated condition. Everyone chuckled nervously, save for Natalie who scowled at the comment. "You know, I never get drunk. The one time I do, people don't let me live it down. Fuck that!" she declared, sitting down beside Trace. Surprised at Natalie's gall to invite herself to sit, Trace muttered, "Why don't you ladies have a seat." Lily pulled a chair to the table, sitting on the other side of Trace, leaving the only available seat beside Justin. Cat sighed deeply, audible to everyone present. Justin, who had remained silent through this entire show, became irritated at Cat's sigh and sucked his teeth. "You don't have to sit next to me. I can move." Cat then realized that the sigh had come off wrong and hurried to explain. "No. No…I wasn't sighing because of you." She paused and rethought her statement. "Well, actually I am. Can I talk to you for a minute?" Justin glanced at Trace, who nodded slightly. Sighing himself, Justin stood and met Cat's eyes. "Lead the way." * * * |

Justin stood and followed Catalina out of the small restaurant. As he trailed her, he could not help but appreciate her curvaceous form. Built similar to Kim
Kardashian, but without the "porn star" quality. His eyes traveled the length of her frame from her head to her feet and back up.
As his eyes finally returned to her head, he found Cat staring at him in irritation. "You'd think you'd never seen a woman before," she quipped. Justin blushed and grinned shyly. "Sorry." For what seemed to Justin like the thousandth time that evening, Cat sighed. She tucked a few loose strands of hair behind her ear before speaking. "Look…Justin…I'm sorry for my attitude yesterday and today… It's nothing personal." Justin stayed silent and stared intently at the woman in front of him. She was so pretty. And she seemed really smart, which he found refreshing. Still, though, he was irritated and intrigued both at the same time. Cat bit her lip and twiddled her thumbs nervously. She looked out over the parking lot as a car pulled around to the "drive thru." "Um…I just…you make me nervous," Cat continued. Justin blinked in surprise. "Why?" Cat scoffed and threw her hands up in the air. "You're not serious." Justin rubbed his hands together and nodded slowly in realization. It was his celebrity that made her nervous. He was surprised. She seemed so confident and mature, which he didn't see much of when in the company of women who didn't know him. "I see," he stated simply. Cat shrugged. "What can I say. You are…well, you know who you are." Justin smirked. "Yeah. I know who I am. But you don't." Confused, Cat raised an eyebrow. "I don't understand." Justin folded his arms across his chest. "I mean, yeah, I'm famous. But music is my job. Like being a lawyer or a doctor. I'm a guy like any other guy and you don't know me. I tried to be nice and talk to you but you immediately judged me as someone you couldn't know because of my job." Cat looked uneasy and scratched her neck. "Seems to be a trend for me lately." Justin rolled his eyes and turned back toward the door. Cat reached out and touched his arm lightly. Both stopped. Justin looked over his shoulder to see Cat biting her lip again, nervous. "Um," she began. "I…I don't want you to think I'm some crazy bitch." Justin wanted to say, "too late," but held back and grinned lightly. "Well prove you're not and be cordial when I try to talk you…" His hand came up and touched hers which rested still on his arm. Catalina cleared her throat and drew her hand from his. "Fair enough," she replied simply. "Ok, then." Justin nodded and opened the door. Stepping aside, he gestured for her to enter ahead of him. Still looking uneasy, Cat moved ahead and into the restaurant, Justin trailing behind.

Justin held the door for Catalina as they reentered the Wendy's. Catalina approached the table, wringing her hands nervously.
Lily, Natalie and Trace seemed to be having a grand old time, laughing about…whatever they were laughing about. Natalie looked up and smiled at Cat, while munching lazily on a french fry. "Hey! Welcome back. Did you two make out, yet?" Trace and Natalie guffawed as if it was the funniest thing either of them had ever heard. Justin appeared unaffected by the comment, while Cat blushed furiously. "This lady's fucking hi-larious," Trace announced. Ignoring him, Justin slid into the booth. Cat hesitated ever so slightly before sliding in next to him. She began unwrapping her cheeseburger, the entire time, her eyes pleaded with Lily's across the table. She found nothing but amusement staring back. "So," Trace began, his eyes fixed on Cat. "Why have you been so rude to my friend, here?" As the words exited his mouth, Trace instinctively jerked his legs away from Justin. Surprisingly, Justin made no move to kick him and instead reached for one of his long cold fries, the faintest of grins playing across his lips. "I make her nervous," he answered. His face was serious but there was teasing in his voice.

.: Chapter IX :.
Justin held the door for Catalina as they reentered the Wendy's. Catalina wrung her hands nervously as she approached the table. Lily, Natalie and Trace seemed to be having a grand old time, laughing about…whatever they were laughing about. Natalie looked up and smiled at Cat, while munching lazily on a french fry. "Hey! His expression was now serious but there was teasing in his voice. Cat blushed, embarrassedly, and twirled her hair between her index and middle fingers. Internally, she screamed at Justin for blowing up her spot in front of her friends, but tried to play it off by shrugging with indifference. "You make lots of girls nervous," she replied, taking a bite from her burger. Justin and Trace shared a look, Trace raising his eyebrows in question at his friend. Justin ignored him, glancing at Cat. "Well, we're gonna work on you not being nervous, right?" Cat rolled her eyes, exasperated by Justin's flippancy and arrogance. "Why the hell does it matter so much if you make me nervous?" Lily, Natalie and Trace sat silent, enthralled by the dialogue. "'Cause I can't ask you out if I know you're nervous around me," Justin answered simply. His nonchalant response caused Natalie to choke on her Diet Coke. Cat's eyes bulged from her head and she mentally thanked God that she had already swallowed, because she would have been right there with Natalie. "Ooh, and the plot thickens," Lily cooed. She, Trace and a gasping Natalie laughed. Justin and Cat remained serious. "Excuse me?" Cat questioned. A faint grin played on Justin's face, but his eyes darkened in seriousness. He remained silent. In fact, everyone remained silent for several moments, soaking up Justin's comment. "I'm gonna ask you out at some point. But not until I know you're not nervous anymore." Cat scoffed. "And you think I'll say yes?" Shrugging, Justin reached across and grabbed Trace's soda. After taking a long sip, he offered a knowing grin. The silence was now thick with a strange hybrid of amusement and tension. Eventually, Cat's unexpected laughter broke the quiet. Oddly, the laughter did not sound amused, but rather bitter. Everyone stared at her in disbelief. Cat could not believe Justin's audacity. There was a thin line between confidence - which she had witnessed outside - and arrogance. And Justin had effortlessly pop-and-locked his way across it. True, he was good-looking and talented and sexier than necessary, but that didn't make him irresistible Catalina was a grown-ass woman, not one of his air-headed groupies and apparently her admission of nervousness had given him the impression that she was "putty" in his hands. Well fuck that! He needed to get over himself and Cat would have no part in contributing to his inflated ego. "Wow. You are one cocky ass motherfucker." Without another word, Cat pushed her tray away and slid from the booth. Still giggling in wonder and anger, she made her way out of the Wendy's. Lily stood and jogged after her while Natalie shook her head across at Justin. "Bitch ass." Standing, she turned to Trace. "Your friend is a jack-ass. And you owe Lily twenty bucks!" * * * Justin's head jerked toward Trace in angry surprise, while Natalie pursued her friends. Trace let out a pained whimper as Justin's foot again made contact with his leg. "Justin, I swear to God I'm gonna beat your ass!" "You placed a fucking bet?" Justin spit through clenched teeth. The look on Trace's face challenged Justin's. "All I said was that you'd never ask her out after the way she acted. They," he waved a dismissive finger toward the door of the restaurant, "said I had to give them twenty bucks if you did." Justin shook his head in disbelief and sat back hard in his seat. "What the fuck, dude." "Don't get mad at me. It was your dumb ass comment that made her leave," Trace defended. "I was flirting." Trace sucked his teeth. "If that was flirting, you've really lost your touch." Justin sighed angrily and slid his frame from the booth. Walking quickly to the door, he pushed through just in time to see Lily's car peel out of the parking lot. "Fuck," Justin breathed. * * * "Cat? Honey? You ok?" Lily questioned cautiously. "I'm fine," Cat answered easily. Internally, her brain was screaming at her. This time, unlike the times before, Cat allowed the screaming to continue. She was so mad for allowing herself to be manipulated by Justin. She was certain now, more than ever, that all men were dicks. Even the famous ones. |
