I never know what to say to that either. I usually say entry-level, but I have no clue.

Well the position is for a legal assistant full-time.
I've worked as a secretary in a law firm before part-time getting paid $11/hr...but since it's full-time I'm unsure how to respond. Plus this position required a college education. When I worked at a firm before I had no college education so my rate should be a little higher now.. |

Start by saying you're very flexible and then say you've researched what the average is and expect to make between ____ and _____.

What city are you in? I'm always very up front about what I want but I add, "but I am flexible" to the end of my dollar amount. It's best to
know what salaries are going for in the city you're in and then try to gauge with your experience.
(I'm a legal assistant, by the way) |

I always say "I'm open". Going too high risks them no longer considering you. Going too low risks them offering you a low salary when they
could've offered you more. If they push and push me for a number, I say "in my last position, I made ___ and I would like to stay in that range".

I usually write negotiable or I say I am flexible and ask them to name a salary. I don't like to negotiate so I feel better if they name the first price
and I can negotiate from there if necessary. The position I just took pays about 15K more than I would have asked for, so I was glad I let them tell me what
their budget was

Always put "Competitive Pay" that way there is room for bargaining.

say it is negotiable and that you're sure they have budgeted a range for the position and ask what it is. make those bitches tell you the number first. lol

They already have an idea what they want to pay for that position, if you are too specific you could knock yourself out of consideration for a job that you
might really want. On the other hand, you might have a set number in mind that you really want, so you want to know if they are going to be in that range.
Tricky.
Cee's approach is good. Have a range in mind, but tell them you are flexible depending on the job responsibilities and the learning and growth opportunities that the job offers. Mercury's approach is good too, tell them what you currently make if you have to, and tell them you want to stay in that range or if you are looking to step up to the next level. |

The best way is to make THEM give you a figure. That's the method that works the best in bargaining a good salary for yourself.

I'm a recruiter, and I always appreciate when people give me actual numbers. I would never screw anyone over (if we're offering 45-50K and the person
asks for 30, I would bring them up to the bottom of our range), but I also like to know that people have a realistic expectation of what a position pays.

And for where I am in my career, I am fully comfortable in naming the price that I feel I am worth.

What if you have no idea though...If you're just starting out and the position is not a typical one where you can research? I always feel uncomfortable
trying to guess, so I say negotiable.
