My 12 year old brother is going to be in the hospital from tonight through at least the weekend for testing and observation and apparently it could be something very serious. My family is a wreck.

There's a long medical term for exactly what it is, but I think that's the general problem.... with an irregular heart beat. Does anyone have any
experience with this at all?

it can be quite serious. If you knew the exact terminology, I could tell you exactly how serious. There are different kinds of enlargements and different kinds
of irregular heart beats.

We're at the hospital right now and they're putting an IV in, I don't want to ask my dad the exact name right now because he's taking this
really hard and even talking to him about it makes me want to cry. Basically he went to the dr with an ear infection last week and they noticed an irregular
heart beat so they took him to a pediatric cardiologist today and they said it looks a lot worse than they originally thought. He didn't have any symptoms
of anything heart related - no chest pains or anything, but they seem to think it could be something bad. He said he had one Xray at the pediatric doctor
today.

It's very serious, or it can be. I've known two kids that have died from it.
I hope your brother's all right. |

Are they still in the process of diagnosing your brother, or have they come up with a treatment plan?

It's better to find out now. They can put your brother on meds and monitor him and his athletic participation. Most kids/people that die never know they
have any condition because it goes undiagnosed very frequently.
Finding out, though it comes as a shock and is scary, is really a good thing. |

It's a good thing they caught it before it was too late.

I didn't mean to freak you out - both boys I knew who died, died as a result of athletics and not knowing they had a heart condition. It's a good thing
the doctors may have caught your brother's condition early.

Tonight is his first night here, they're keeping him here through the weekend. There's no official diagnosis but they do know that it's enlarged
and not beating normally. He's got a million monitors all over his chest and it's so scary looking.
He IS very athletic so I know that its very very very good that they found out. He's on a traveling baseball team and a regular league so he plays/practices almost everyday, but they said that its not caused by that at all, though it can't be helpful either. I almost wish I wouldn't have made this post because now I am so much more nervous. If you are the praying kind, please keep him in your prayers. |

I'll definitely keep him in my prayers.
I don't think an enlarged heart is caused by athletics, but I think it aggravates the heart when it's already not beating properly. Try not to be too nervous - he's in good hands. |

Yeah the enlargement can be due to many things, but is usually congenital, meaning he was born with it. Him being an athletic kid doesn't cause it, but can
definitely cause problems.

I have left ventricular hypertrophy....an enlargement of the left ventricle of the heart. So long as I control my blood pressure and keep it low it doesn't
get worse. Most people find out about it after a heart attack and/or when they're much older. My asthma caused me to get an echo cardiogram and that is
what diagnosed it. Since I've had it diagnosed and have controlled my blood pressure it has not enlarged. However.....due to the issue and my migraines I
had to stop taking hormone based BC.l

Just a semi-update: They moved him into the less serious side of ICU last night so that he could have nurses that only have one or two patients, as opposed to
the five patients the regular pediatrics nurse had. He's on all of the monitors until sometime this afternoon and hopefully then they'll have more
information on what's going on. It broke my heart last night because I think he started to realize that it was something more serious and he started
crying, which made me and my sister start bawling. We're trying to act strong in front of him so he won't worry. Hopefully this will end up being
something minimal and not serious.
