I'd forgotten how much I hate the sequences where they're beating him up on the Kryptonite island and then when he falls back to Earth after putting the thing into space. It's horrible, they're kicking the shit out of him and it's heart breaking

!!!! I was just thinking about pulling out my DVD. I loved this film so much when it came out - I think I saw it four times in theatres. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the
first action sequence where he saves the plane Lois is on and says that he hopes no one will be put off of air travel because of it.
And yes, when he's being beaten, it's heartwrenching.

Great movie!! I borrowed it from my friend a while back, it was a lot better than I expected it to be! I still haven't given it back
Although, what has always bothered me -and I'm sure everyone else- is WHY CANT THEY TELL ITS HIM WITH GLASSES?!

I have never understood how the glasses so effectively fool everyone. It's not like he even restyles his hair or puts on a fake beard... it's a pair of
glasses

I think it's just going with the old comic book convention about a simple mask being able to hide a person's identity. Of course people would know
it's him, but that's just why you have to suspend your disbelief and go with it.
Once on Lois & Clark (the TV show - yes I'm showing my age) Clark's powers were transferred to Lois and she filled in as a super hero while they figured it out. She was so sure that no one would be fooled by her little mask, but Clark was all, 'Just put it on and trust me!' and no one even blinked at her!

I never saw that episode, I like it
Brandon Routh is so good in this role. He's so eerily like Christopher Reeve without being some cheap imitation. |

I love Brandon in the role. Perfection.
There's a wax statue of him as Superman in NYC and I may or may not have ogled it and taken pics with it. |

It's okay. Hamley's in London had one of Will Turner for POTC and I went and ogled.

I don't understand why everyone hates that movie so much. WAY better than X-Men and whatever.

I love it. I think Bryan Singer did an amazing job with both this and X Men - it's just that Superman as a character/comic is lighter in tone than Batman,
X Men and Spiderman. Those super heroes are all a lot more angsty and so when you pile that on it's easier to make it "deep" and
"gritty" or whatever else they get praised for as well as being entertaining/having great SFX. Sometimes I think Superman Returns just got a bad rap
because it was naturally lighter stuff.
Though... Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane? I like her and all, but no. |

the lakes slave wrote:Well, the main reason I didn't like it? This movie was supposed to be a continuation of the original franchise, correct? (or at least, supposed to take place between what, the 2nd and 3rd movies, something like treating movies 3 & 4 as if they were never created?) Anyways, it was supposed to be tied, perhaps loosely, to the original franchise (not like Batman Begins where it was a new start). We watched it and I felt like I had seen the movie before. After getting out of jail, Lex Luthor comes up with a diabolical scheme with prime real estate to make money, but naturally his scheme will cause innocent deaths. I'm pretty certain they recycled at least a few lines from the first Superman too. I wanted to see something new, and didn't feel like I got it, I felt like I'd seen the plot before and heard the lines before. That's why I didn't like Returns, give me the originals any day. Just my opinion though. |

I loved the movie as well, but more for the filming of it and how beautiful is was.
It did have a jesus complex aspect to it. |

insomniachollie wrote:I never understood that, in any of the movies. But in this movie, when he is Clark, he has his natural eyes (brown) and when he is Superman, he has these steel blue contacts that work perfectly. I never thought with the glasses, that he looked like Christopher Reeve, but HOLY HELL, when he becomes Superman, they are so identical. You'd think Brandon was CR's son or something. Henry Cavill was up for this role but didn't get it (Empire records actually dubbed him the most unlucky man in Hollywood because he lost out of three major roles: Superman, James Bond and Batman -as in the role Christian Bale got). I like Henry, but after seeing Brandon, he was perfect for the role and his height was better (B is about 6'3/6'4 whereas H is only 6'1). |

Random Sandwiches wrote:Me too! I thought he was really good. Bosworth as Lois however, really irked me. I think she was trying to do Katherine Hepburn too much and she just should've played it more natural. I don't get why so many ppl hated the movie either, my friends and I really enjoyed it. The Superman theme in the beginning always gets me super excited & feeling like a little kid again. |

cryinblue wrote:It did, and I absolutely loved that about it. has Bryan talked about that? I'm sure he has, I just haven't seen anything on it yet. I thought it was perfect. the movie was really breathtaking for me. i just loved seeing that there is this incredible burden for Superman/Clark that no one can really truly understand; where he succeeds, he's going to fail elsewhere; he can't be in 2 places at once even though he will try; how there are bigger things in this universe than even his love for Lois Lane and how he's willing to sacrifice everything, his life if need be, for the greater good. just incredibly moving. the film spoke to me so spiritually without even necessarily meaning to, because the spirituality was more subtle. and the moments with Marlon Brando really made me cry. there were a few flaws but very minor and everything else was just so perfectly done. I have HUGE respect for Bryan Singer for both SR & the first 2 X-men. he's such a talented person. mad props. who hated the movie? i think i read ONE bad review on here and that was it. every other one everyone was saying how it was way better than they had expected it to be. it still floors me how eerily perfect Brandon was. like, astonishingly so. just everything about his performance, he absolutely nailed. didn't have many lines, but even when he did, he completely pulled it off. could not have been a better casting choice. and i love the Superman curl Bosworth was a miscast and she's always been. oh well. she wasn't horrible and in fact she did better than in probably any of her other movies but she still wasn't Lois Lane. I love Spacey but i don't like him for Lex at all. for me, so far only Gene, John Shea (L&C), and Michael Rosenbaum can pull off Lex convincingly. |

I think the whole glasses thing is more in how Clark carries himself compared to Superman.
I loved the movie, I don't get the hate either. |

Yeah. That's what I love about comic book movies, those central character conflicts. With Spiderman it's his sense of responsibility and the burden he carries with it, with Batman it's having to be willing to make himself an outcast and a wanted criminal in the name of his mission, be willing to be cast as the villain when really he's the hero, and with Superman it's this messiah thing. He has to live amongst humans and wants to involve himself with humans while always knowing that he's not one of them, he has to be their guiding light and their saviours and how that wears on him. I love it! |

I just rewatched it today and I was reminded of mow much I disliked Kate Bosworth. She's so plain (and I don't mean her looks - she's very cute). I
don't believe that Clark/Superman would have loved her so darn much. Or James Marsden for that matter. There was none of the tough-as-nails stuff to her
that the original Lois Lane should have had. Moxy! And she was too young. Every close up of her was like, geez, what is she twelve or something? I never bought
her as a mom. Hollywood needs to seriously stop with the uber-young nubile girls as the female leads in movies - it just isn't realistic.
