I'm watching Coupling, and Susan doesn't want an epidural. What does an epidural do other than relieve pain? I mean I know you're drugged up... but
man, if I'm pushing something out of that hole, I do NOT want to feel it.

I just found out this past week that my mom only had an epidural for the first of her four kids. I was very impressed!

I think there are many benefits to child and mother doing a natural birth versus a drugged up one.

A needle goes into your spine, and some women get a huge headache afterwards that won't go away.

My best friend didn't want one. Then, she finally decided she did, but they checked her and said it was too late. She had to push. Pissed is an
understatement.

Because you can get hurt with the needling going in.
I wanted to try and not get one.. but as soon as I was in labor.. I was in so much pain.. I LOVED that Epi! |

I'll take any pain that comes along with the getting an epidural. I'm thinking that won't feel nearly as bad as a baby coming out of my vagina.

What are the benefits of natural birth? Because really, I don't see it.
Heh, at the same time, I'm not even sure I want kids.. so yeah. |

There are risks associated with epidurals. Granted, they are not necessarily going to every person, but some people don't want to chance it.
* Hypotension (Drop in blood pressure) * Urinary Retention and Postpartum Bladder Dysfunction * Uncontrollable Shivering * Itching of the face, neck and throat * Nausea and Vomiting * Postpartum Backache * Maternal Fever * Spinal Headache * Uneven, incomplete or nonexistent pain relief * Feelings of Emotional detachment * Postpartum feelings of regret or loss of autonomy * Inability to move about freely on your own * Loss of perineal sensation and sexual function * Convulsions * Respitory paralysis * Cardiac arrest * Allergic shock * Nerve injury * Epidural abscess * Maternal death |

I didn't have one with any of my children. I elected not to start their lives with drugs coursing through their bodies.

The whole sticking a needle in my spin thing is scary. My co-worker got a dropped foot because someone did her epidural wrong.

I itched real bad after they turned the Epi off... The nurse said it was b/c of the morphine
My co-workers wife has headaches b/c of hers, so when she had her second child she didn't get an epi. Also you CANT drive for 2 weeks after. |

And an epidural is nothing like the child being born on cocaine. |

Well my friend didn't have one and she made a good point: she said that it is only one day of your life. So I will take that into consideration when it is
my turn to give birth.
