Yeah, I don't believe that at all.

Nope. The first grader's mother was the one complaining and ranting about it on how she'll have to do the whole project, cause you can bring the family
too.

Nor can they focus that long on one thing. Hell, I have to change activities for my 8th graders every 10-15 minutes. Oh, and the only way I could talk for almost an hour is if I wrote down everything I was going to say on notecards and practice practice practice. Even then, I don't think I could do it. |

Yeah, if the mom heard if from the kid, she either heard it wrong or the kid was lying.

I'm not sure who she got it from.

Yeah, something is definitely off there. It must be abuse or something to make a child talk for that long.

Even most adults don't have an attention span that long to listen, let alone a 6 year old. The children in the class are going to be off in lala land
within a couple mins.

^it's going to get to the point where kids just start singing Miley Cyrus/Wiggles songs and pretending to be Ben Ten/Yu-Gi-Oh.
there is no way that can be right. if that is true, someone needs to take a closer look at that teacher's teaching certificate. |

I know we're supposed to push the kids to reach further and think at higher levels, but 50 minutes? Come on!

Sounds like the teacher just wants to make damn sure she has a day off every week

I've been in first grade classes where they do something similar, a lot of teachers call it "star of the week." However, the longest I've
ever seen it last is about 20 minutes, and that was with a really talkative, attention seeking kid. Most kids get up there for about 5 or 10 minutes, answer a
few questions and that's that. 50 minutes seems excessive. It almost sounds like the teacher used to teach one of the upper grades and needs to adjust her
expectations to meet the level of younger children.

Hopefully the mom has just misunderstood the assignment? Yikes.
I have to give a little speech on my family and background next week and I'm just hoping I have a few minutes worth of things to say. |

Maybe it's suppose to take 50 minutes for the whole class. Not each student.

But... but if every kid was going to spend a whole period talking about his/her family... how would they learn anything in the first month?!

It makes sense if you include a snack, craft, and little presentation about the family.

Yikes, I really hope that's 15 minutes and not 50.

50 minutes? That's ridiculous. My one cousin just started second grade and he didn't have to do any speeches in first grade. Let alone one that was 50
minutes long.
