If for religious reasons, you don't think your church should perform gay marriages, then fine.
But what does religion have to do with CIVIL ceremonies?
And why do people care so much?

The act of getting a marriage license is NOT a religious act. It's a civil act. After you obtain the license, you then can choose to have the ceremony
performed in a church or by a civil servant (judge, etc).

I know the people at my work that actually care are the religious nuts.

I've never understood it. Of course, I had a couple (older) relatives that were offended because my wedding, even though it was to a man, obviously,
wasn't religious. They were upset that we didn't pray or use biblical quotes. I held my tongue.

Because it's still called a marriage license, and people see that weirdly. If all marriage licenses were changed to something else, then fine.
It's totally unconstitutional, btw. 14th Amendment. You cannot deprive one section of the population the same rights you allow another. I also think the Full Faith and Credit clause should be invoked, but others don't see that argument It will change, probably sooner than people think. After all, in a lot of states 50 years ago, white and black couldn't marry. |

Because the majority of people get "married" in a church. And until Napoleon came around (don't doubt me on this!) the churches were where you
got married.

But I'm sure there were "marriages" way before there were churches or organized religions. |

Are we talking Ancient Rome or Greece? Egypt? Yes, there were marriages there. but they usually had some kind of religious aspect. Not Jesus, but whatever gods
they prayed to.

Historically, the reasons for marriage was for property/alliances or for children. So yes, you're right. But that doesn't negate the historic religious
aspect of it. It had to be sanctioned by someone, regardless of the culture you're talking bout. Except the cavemen.

People are also afraid of a slippery slope. What's next? Group Marriage? Beastiality? How about friends marrying eachother just for benefits? (Think: Chuck
and Larry)

I agree with the slippery slope concept. People are afraid of the "what's next?" It makes no logical sense though.

It's a crazy world we live in and who knows how much crazier it will get once gay marriage is as common as traditional marriage. BTW, humans marrying animals has existed already throughout history. I'm all about love, but people are always testing limits. |

Here's an example why it's more complicated for a man and woman to marry for benefits: Sally meets Tom. They are friends. They come up with a
*brilliant* idea to marry so Sally can get some health insurance. A few months later Sally meets the love of her life, John. John has reserves about Sally
being married and decides not to risk getting too involved. He finds Sally to be unstable. He finds another woman who is single. Sally regrets missing out on a
good man just for benefits. Here comes another divorce in the USA. If Sally had married her working friend Holly, she would've lived happily ever after
with John. Make sense?

As for marrying animals, that's a creepy cult thing. No government sanctions it, and since animals aren't sentient, they won't.
