I think it's mostly cultural thing that I still eat meat.
Any ex-omnivores gone vegetarian/vegan?

What was your reason and how do you feel overall? I still eat meat even though every now and then I read books about the virtues of keeping a plant-based diet.
I stop reading when I feel like it's pulling me too close to wanting to go veggie. Ignorance is bliss.

I have been vegetarian for 3 1/2 years. I never really liked meat and I feel bad for the animals. As long as I get enough protein I feel great. I'm very
happy I went veggie.

Are your family members/friends mostly carnivores, vegetarians/vegans, or both? If carnivores, how are you treated at social functions? See, for me, I come
from a culture of heavy meat-eaters and all of our social functions revolve around food. My cousin is a vegan and he moved to a city where we don't have
many family members.

Technically, the term is "omnivore"!

I am the only vegetarian in my family. They are big on meat. Some of them are quite rude but they aren't nice about anything that is different from them.
For the most part my family is very respectful and accommodating. All my friends eat meat but they are great.

I was veg* for a few years, I do eat meat now but I'm really picky about it. It's very easy for meat to become disgusting very quickly, like mid-meal.
When I was veg* the comments and nagging to eat meat were fairly relentless, and total strangers will feel free to insult you regarding your food choices. It gets old. |

I hit my one year mark being a vegetarian yesterday, and it really hasn't been too tough. I read a book one day that really got to me, and I never ate meat
again.

I used to love meat, but then I educated myself about the meat industry, and how animals are treated in factory farms. Aside from that, I'm not too big on
killing animals haha. I'm a vegetarian for animal rights reasons. In January I will have been a vegetarian for four years.
And yes, it's omnivore unless you eat nothing but meat. I am very glad that I became a vegetarian. It wasn't even very hard at all. People who do it just to do it do not seem to last very long, but if you're doing it for a reason that you really believe in, it's much easier to stick to it. |

If you want something that will most likely make you want to stop eating meat, go to PETA's website and watch "Meet Your Meat".

And also, embrace the word pescaterian if it applies to you--vegetarians do NOT eat fish.

The way we torture and murder animals in this country and get away with it makes me SICK. I can't eat an animal. I can't do it. I'd sooner
eat a person than another animal.

See, I want to do it because I do believe all of the information written extolling the virtues of a plant-based diet, as well as my love for animals and the
environment. However, I'd feel like a hypochrite if I did that and then still wear leather or have leather-anything. Arghhhh...how do I wrap my mind around
that?

Yes, omnivore.
I went vegetarian for environmental reasons, animal rights reasons, and for health reasons. Truthfully, I'm not a huge animal person at all, but I don't like to see them suffer before they're killed. I know you can find decent meats where the animal doesn't suffer in the process, but for me it was just easier to go vegetarian. I also wanted to see if it would improve my skin, hair, and overall health like some people claim it may. I feel.. okay overall. Not much different. At school, it's a little more difficult to eat vegetarian because I'm also extremely picky, but I don't feel any different. I do miss chicken sometimes. I haven't had pork or red meat in years anyway, and never will again. I don't miss that, but I may go back to chicken/fish sometime in the future. |

I am a vegan! I had been veggie off and on for a few years, but I made the switch to being vegan about 8 months ago. my reasons to make the switch were all
across the board from my own health, to the environment, and because I don't agree with the way the agricultural industry is, plus the quality of most meat
and dairy products these days are pretty disgusting, not to mention all the torture that happens. so really, it was more of a "what reason do I have to
continue eating this crap?" and all I could come up with was "it tastes good", which basically told me food was a hobby, and that's not ok
with me.

Yeah, I get "You don't even eat fish?" a lot. I think I have been asked about chicken ONCE, if that. No, people...chicken counts as meat. So does
fish, IMO. It's the same thing. You're still eating a dead animal.

The other day, I saw this woman eating a veggie sandwich. I said, "Oh, are you vegetarian/vegan?" She said, "Yes. My husband and I do not eat
meat. We eat mostly vegetables, pork, chicken, and seafood." This was me
.
