(AP) - Police say a man threatened to jump from a bridge above a Detroit-area freeway for more than eight hours before surrendering to officers. Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer says the 51-year-old St. Clair Shores man was clad only in green shorts on a pedestrian bridge above Interstate 696. Dwyer says the man lost his job in November and is depressed. A passing motorist called police shortly after 11 a.m. Wednesday. The freeway then was closed, snarling traffic in the suburbs north of Detroit. Dwyer says the man ended the standoff around 7:20 p.m. and cooperated with officers. Dwyer says the man was to be hospitalized. The freeway quickly reopened. |
