I still need to open a bank account here in Nebraska... somebody is FedExing me a check. If it's a personal check, can I take it to one of those check
cashing places to get cash for it? It'll be either $600 or $800 so I'm not sure what to do with it and I need the cash now to pay bills so I'm
like, uh, what do I do?

You can cash checks at a lot of grocery stores and even Walmart for a small fee.

You can probably also cash it at a bank tho you don't have an account but you'll more than likely pay a fee.

Or they might cash it at a liquor store if you buy something

Walmart won't cash personal checks. If the bank the check is written off of is not one in Nebraska, then you could try a check cashing place. Some will
cash personal checks. But why don't you just go ahead and open an account Monday? Or are your bills due before then?

I would go to the bank that it's drawn from. I don't think the bank charges you but i could be wrong

BitzNCami wrote:He's FedExing it Monday so I'll get it Tuesday. The banks here want me to have a Nebraska ID, which I'm not ready to get yet, because I don't want to switch my car registration over and I think I have to switch my registration when I get my new license. Plus I need two new tires, which I need to pay for with this freaking check. The check is coming from New York... maybe I can just ask him to go to a Bank of America there and deposit his check in the branch, since I don't have any branches here. |

Jrtismine wrote: Most banks charge you if you don't have an account even if the check is from one of their customers. OP, I think that if you go to the bank when you get the check, you should be able to open an account with that check and only deposit the minimum needed and get the rest in cash. this way you should avoid any fees. |

Thanks everybody for your suggestions, I really appreciate it! I also have a friend who runs a business who will let me sign the check over to her, and
she'll give me cash, but I just have to catch her on a day when she hasn't done a deposit.
Woe is me! Seriously though, thank you everybody. I feel like I came off combative in this post and I really didn't mean to be. |

Can't he just send you the money via western union?? It's quick and easy and you can walk out with the cash.

I'm not 100% sure yet... I'm actually really liking it here. I think NYC or San Francisco is in the five-year plan, but my friend and I are launching a
new company that might actually do really well.
I think now my plan is to stay here until I get a really great job offer to go elsewhere. |

Western Union isn't free. It would cost 41.99 to send $800 from New York.
