I agree with what someone said earlier - there's no way the city could win. If they didn't have the memorial, people would be rioting and causing damage. So, they agreed to fund the logistical part of the memorial... so people wouldn't riot. The whole world got a beautiful service as a result. And now the taxpayers are left footing the bill. Why NOT let people donate? It's just like sending flowers or donations to a charity for a private citizen's funeral. However, I DO think the Jacksons are showing their true colors by not covering a huge portion of this. Same with AEG. That's shameful, in my opinion. |

I live in NY and thankfully I don't think Mayor Bloomberg or our governor would even offer to pick up the tab for this foolishness!
People die everyday and if the Jackson family wanted to have this special for "fans" they should have picked up the tab - as other families do when their loved ones die. Britney Spears has her own security team and clearly the LAPD don't do much to protect celebs OR CIVILIANS when it comes to the papparrazi acting the fool on the streets of LA or the roads. Perhaps that's how the state can earn money - stop supporting unemployed women who have too many babies (b/c you know the govt picks up the tab for the 1st several years of the lives of premies - including medicaid and WIC - in addition to any other aid the parent(s) receive) and start fining these "photographers" who are knocking over civilians, causing drama at LAX or getting involved in car chases to earn a living! |

AEG and the family did pay for the actual memorial s I understand it -- the 4 million dollar tab was for police presence, sanitation workers, etc. It is
normal for a city to provide free police escorts and protection for events and funerals, the cost is just inflated here because the size is so large -- but it
would have been pretty unusual to ask a family to pay for police escorts/protection at a funeral.
Now, I do think that making AEG pay for it would be totally appropriate. LA should have strong armed them more before memorial took place. I've read now that AEG has refused to contribute, so it's too late to make them pay now. Too bad California politicians don't seem to be in the habit of thinking ahead. |
