Don't use Coinstar, they steal too much of your money!!! Roll it yourself and bring it to a bank and/or find a bank that does it for free! I know Commerce
used to do it, but now it is something else.

Yup, I didn't have enough money for bus fare to go to school and come back. I went to my father's bathroom, where he keeps the change and gathered
enough for bus fare.

I always throw my spare change in mugs when I get home at night, then I cash in the mugs for spending money before I go on vacation. I don't like the coinstar fee, but I hate rolling. I always have $1.95 in nickels when you need to $2.00. It's a pain in the ass. |

I do that all the time! Right now I'm saving all of my change that I'll probably cash in next week. It will buy me some food!

I have a big container full of change that I'm saving to use as "fun" money when my boyfriend and I go on a cruise. No idea how much is in there
but I do throw bills in there sometimes too in exchange for frequently rummaging for quarters to do laundry. There might be $100 in the jar but there are very
few quarters left

We always take our change in when it fills up the change bowls.

So you have 10 THOUSAND dollars sitting in your kitchen cabinets and you just let it sit there?Yes... it's a big job to get that cashed and I like hoarding coins anyway.
What in the hell? Go cash that change in! I will at some stage! I have to decide on a use for it though. I'm thinking that my coin jars could be my regular donations to the local animal shelter.

taniaoakley I need to get like you. Seriously. How long did it take you save up that much change? And donating sounds like a very cool idea.

I have no idea how long. Like I said earlier, I never use change, I always hand over notes. I empty my wallet of change whenever it gets to the point that my
bag doesn't pass the scanners at the airport because there's too much metal...
It then gets emptied on the kitchen bench and goes into the latest coffee jar.
It wouldn't buy me a nice vacation, my vacations usually cost WAY more than 10K. I don't have any use for the money other than to donate it to something so I'm not highly motivated to go get it cashed. I shouldn't have said anything.

I never used those coin change machines.
I do remember once I had just paid my mortgage and other bills and had almost nothing in my purse or my bank account. I went without food for about 2 days. By the 2nd day I was so hungry that when I went to the supervisor's office to drop off some papers, I saw some candy on his desk and quickly unwrapped it and popped it into my mouth. Then I quickly left the office. Later that day, I borrowed some money from my mother and bought some food to carry me over until I got paid. (I had hesitated in asking her but at that point, I had no choice and was desperate.) |

When I was in high school, a woman made the local news for saving her change for ten years and accumulating close to $50,000 in change. She used that money to go on a second honeymoon. Sooo, I decided to do it, too. I've been saving my change for the past 7 years.

I did that when I was saving for disney world. I am doing it again because I am saving up for my wedding. I am also collecting cans to make ends meet. I
don't get a lot for them but it is fun going and looking for them.

O.k., o.k., o.k. I don't understand.
The title of this post is: "Have you ever been so broke that you gathered all your change to get cash for it?" Then the OP says: "I did this a couple of weeks ago and it really got me out of jam." Yet.... a few posts down, the OP says: "I had a good time at the movies thanks to that change." ... and "I didn't have bills to pay." So, what was the jam? That she didn't have money to buy popcorn at the movies? I don't get it..... To ME, being SO BROKE that you have to cash in change means, I have real life things to worry about such as paying for electricity and water ... NOT popcorn at a movie. That's just me though And to answer the qustion: NO, I have never been so broke that I've had to cash in loose change just to get by. My boyfriend and I save all of our change, and sometimes even $1 bills. The last time we cashed it in, we had over $280 (which we used to pay for gas and food on vacation.) I don't use Coinstar though.... I just bring the loose change to the bank, and they run it through their coin counter machine.

Don't you have to pay a hefty percentage to use those machines? I would think it would be better to just go to the bank. I mean, rolling the coins sucks,
but it's better than losing a fraction of your money.
