YAY!!!! I haven't been on a vacation outside of North America in years and I'm so excited! We're going next week. Any places you recommend we go
see? I really really want to go see Pompeii and Herculaneum! But what else should we do in five days?

I will go crazy with the camera! Italy has been my dream vacation. I'm just really worried something will go wrong last minute and ruin everything because
good things don't really seem to happen to me. I'm such a pessimist. BUT YAY! I'm happy for now!!

I went to Italy a few years ago and it's absolutely BEAUTIFUL. We went to Rome, Florence, Assisi, & Pisa. I loved it.

you will love it! it really is amazing. i just went for three nights a week ago and stayed in rome; i did a day tour of ancient rome and the vatican, and a day
tour to pompeii and naples. i also was really excited about going to pompeii and i was NOT disappointed - just be warned it is really, really hot in italy in
july/august! wear sunblock and drink lots of water.

I used to be a huge Classical History geek in High School, so I will cry if we can't go see those preserved ancient ruins! And I am really looking forward to HOT weather! It's been such a horrible summer here in Ontario. Rain, rain, rain and more rain! And it hasn't gotten hot at all! |

I went to Rome for 6 days in February and I wasn't crazy about it, but I am going back to Italy on a cruise in October (I'm also spending a few days in
Barcelona and the cruise visits Cannes in France and Malta) but I would really recommend trying to visit the Amalfi coast while you're near Pompeii, or
Sorrento/Positano.. When my cruise stops in Naples we're taking an excursion to Pompeii for 2 hours (I'm not going, the driver is taking me to the
coast instead) and then to Sorrento and Positano for the remainder of the day. I've looked at some many pictures and it looks absolutely gorgeous.
I'm also stopping in Livorno which we could have visited Pisa and Florence but we've decided to just go to Pisa and instead take a tour of Tuscany and visit a winery. Just some ideas for you.. |

Do you guys think we could make a day trip to Venice and come back to Rome by the end of the night? What's there to do in Venice?
And also, should we book a tour guide to see Pompeii or should we just go by ourselves? |

So am I...
You *could* do a day trip to Venice but Rome is not exactly close. I am going Milan, Verona, Venice, Switzerland for 2 seconds, Levanto, Rome, Catania. |

I believe the train trip to Venice takes over 2 hours. And I don't think it's nearly possible to take in all of Venice in one day, you would be selling
the city so short. Plus you have to realize the train tickets are not cheap either.
Everyone recommends a guide in Pompeii, they say it really makes the city come alive. |

Thanks for the advice Jen! I was thinking the same thing regarding tour guides in Pompeii but a friend had recommended otherwise.
