I've never owned a digital camera, and lots of folks here seem techno saavy. Anyone have a good one they'd recommend?

Don't be swayed by the whole megapixels things. It's vastly overblown.
Most point and shoot cameras are basically the same. Go to Amazon.com and look for recommendations in your price range. |

I just bought the Canon Powershot SX1 IS. I really like it. Not too bulky, and takes both pictures + videos (in HD!). But it costs more than $100

Canon PowerShot. I have the SD750 and love it.
My daughter has the Sony Cybershot and she loves hers. If you're just starting with the camera thing, I'd go with either of those as they're easy to use, the prices are right for the benefits and they both take really good pictures. |

I wouldn't go with one for $100. If you can, I'd budget about $200 and get whatever the Canon in that price range is.
I have a Canon SD1000 and I really like it, but it's a few years old so I don't know if they sell it anymore. Love it though. It was $200 something. |

I know a lot of people like Canon (I do to, they have some great cameras) but I really like panasonic also, my main camera is a panasonic and I love it not to
mention feature wise the panasonic was on par with the canon and packs a better lens.
Overall I think Panasonic cameras are a better value for the money, but if you have the money to spend Canons are good just more expensive. When I was looking for a new camera I found Nikon (didn't like), Kodak (not terrible but not good enough for what I wanted) and Canons (liked but were out of my price range for what I wanted) were the major brands that I found in most stores. Olympus and Panasonic were two other brands I was looking into and both were harder to find locally (only found one panasonic and two olympus cameras locally and both were not what I was looking for), so I had to go online to really learn about both of those. Though I ended up with my panasonic (TZ5), I bought it without being able to try the interface out in person and I ended up loving it. I used youtube for video reviews and for videos showing the cameras interface. My best advice is to get a camera with iAuto since you are new to digital cameras and expand your budget if at all possible. I say around the $200 mark is probably a good first camera, but in my search I didn't find anything at all under $100 and it's slim choice in the $150 and under range as well. If you can spend at least $200 you'll have much more variety to pick from, but it really depends on what features you want (that will affect the price).

I just bought a Canon A2000IS and I love it. It's a little bulky and heavy-ish but it takes great pictures. I paid $200 but it's on Amazon for $159.

Thanks for the advice, everyone.
If $200 is more what I'd need to spend, I'll just save up a little more.

Canon or Panasonic Lumix. My D-Slr is a Canon and my point and shoot is a Lumix (with a Leica lens).

For a simple point and shoot I'd suggest a Sony Cybershot. For more advanced go Canon. I got a Powershot SX10 IS and it takes amazing pics

I have this one and I'm happy with it:
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-Coolpix-Digital-Optical-Brushed/dp/B0012OELPS/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=photo&qid=1249858037&sr=1-5 I have no idea why it's so expensive now, though. When I bought it in December it was $106. |

Canon and Panasonic Lumix. My Panasonic is a bulky one that has 18x zoom, really nice especially at the concert that I attended last night.

I just bought an older Sony Cybershot, but I'm already considering selling it and getting a Panasonic Lumix. I've heard such great things about it!

I have a Fujifilm Fine Pix 10mega pixels and I LOVE IT. It was only 150 when I bought it. It's a great camera that is tiny, has great flash/scenery picture
modes.

But yeah, its $180.
