So I just finished up an internship in Philly and am looking for another job (asap..need money). The job market in this city is so shitty compared to several
semi closeby cities (mainly new york and boston). I'm trying to apply for jobs in these other cities and I'm sure my chances would be much higher if I
pretended that I lived there...don't have any trouble with Boston since I went to college there but I'm not extremely familiar with new york. I've
been there pretty often since it's only 2 hours away...but I am just really not sure what type of address would be believable for someone who graduated
pretty recently.
...any thoughts? |

I'm not sure if you need to lie about where you live. As long as you state in your cover letter that you're willing and able to relocate then you
should be fine.

luckylauren wrote:Not true. Employers definitely give preference to people who actually live in the city or close(er) to the city where the job is. Even if someone says they are going to relocate, that's a bigger obstacle to over come than someone who already lives there. Things could go wrong with the move; the person moving might not get approved for the apartment, they might end up not having enough $$ to move, etc. etc. |

I was thinking of doing that, luckylauren, but I figured it would put me at a slight disadvantage...

don't put New York City, NY. It's just New York, NY
They will know you are not from NY, NY if you write City. |

ah ok just saw the other replies. I definitely agree with DoesThatSparkle.
I'm thinking of using some random address in Brooklyn or something...or should I stick with Manhattan? Maybe somewhere near NYU? |

I would put a Brooklyn or Queens address. Maybe even NJ.
Otherwise I would put something in the village or in Stuy-town. |

Say something around 1st Ave and 12th Street or 14th Street. I think Stuy-town is 1st Ave and 14th Street.

Do people seriously think that lying about where one lives is okay on a job application or resume? I don't care where you live, lying on any job
application isn't going to get you a job. Companies do credit searches first and will see it's not an address you've ever had on anything. But
heck....go ahead I guess.

Oh yeah, lots of people commute to NYC for work. Don't lie.

Oh yeah, again. What would happen if you said you lived in the city and they called one Saturday morning and they were like 'It's an emergency. We need
you here in half an hour!!'.

I have a believable address you could use, 'cause I live here, but I don't want to post it for everyone to see.
