I have been trying so hard to figure out the answer to this question, and I just can't seem to get it.

Directions say 'calculate the flow rate in gtt/min to the nearest whole drop using the formula method.' (volume x calibration/time)
6. An IV of 500 mL is to infuse at 120 mL/hr using a 20 gtt/mL calibrated set. |

40 gtt/min
It's been a while since I've done this kind of problem so I'm not positive. |

Yep, it's 40 gtt/min.
gtt/min = 20 gtt x 120 mL / 60 min. |

That's what I got too--however, the book states the answer is 83 gtt/min. WTF? |

Hi, i dont post here often, but i wanted to share how I got the answer of 83... 500/120*20=83.3333, when rounded to the nearest whole number 83. Hope this helped! :-) |

but.....500 divided by 2400 (which is what 120 times 20 equals to) doesn't come out to 83... |

i honestly don't even remember how i learned to do it the way i do, i'm pretty sure its a short cut one of my nursing instructors taught me, and its
stuck....im trying to find all my calculation packets to see if i can explain the way I do it...If i can I'll come back!

ah, thank you! I saw the /, which to me indicates division.

I can't find my explaination...but do you have another similar question i could try with the way I do it, and see if it works with that one too?

Now that she cleared up where the multiplying and dividing is taking place, I finished the rest of my problems.
