Is that a surgery? I am all confused. Yes I have googled it, but I need it dumbed down for me.

Basically? They feed a tube into you, your blood goes into a machine to be cleaned (because the kidneys can't manage it) and then pumped back in. It's
not really a surgery, per se, you'd be awake through the whole thing. It's long and dull but not painful, so I'm told

No, it's usually a weekly treatment. Kindof like going to get chemotherapy.

Oh, and it's outpatient (in my experience).

They also install a shunt so that they can hook up the tubes to filter the blood (or they used to).

They may have had to put in a new port to do the dialysis. My grandfather lived with dialysis for more than 4 years and I often had to pick him up. It is
usually done several times a week. You can't just do it once a week if you are in kidney failure

People have a AV (arteriovenous) fistula created. This is used as the port through which the dialysis takes place. It is a surgical procedure to have the
fistula created. Then people go to dialysis on an outpatient basis. My current dialysis patient goes 3 days a week for 5 hours at a time.
