Is it essentially like unlocking it? Because I don't want to unlock my phone. But from what I've been reading on here, it seems to make everything free
or something like that.. and of course that would be nice. I just want to be able to change my damn ringtone without having to download a song from iTunes.

Lets you add 3rd party applications to your phone.

it's not unlocking it. its adding a custom firmware package that, as Limited said, allows you to use third party applications.
some of those include custom backgrounds and the ability to download free apps from the app store. if al you want are ringtones, you dont have to jailbreak for that. you can do that on a stock iphone using itunes for free |

Well, I've been enjoying downloading some applications.. I've only downloaded like three so far because all the free ones suck
Yeah, I can use iTunes but I have to actually download the music from iTunes and pay for it. I tried to use an mp3 that I downloaded elsewhere and it won't let me, It said it must come from iTunes. |

I have a 3G, I just got it a few days ago. I have a PC, and I have the latest version of iTunes so I guess it's 9.0 or something? I had to reinstall it the
other day. Thanks so much!

3.1 isnt jailbroken for use on PCs yet, but i can keep you posted when it is. or you can jailbreak for 3.0.1, but id recommend waiting until the newest one is
out. That way you can use picture mail when it drops next week

Oooh you can make ringtones from songs you already have? I didn't know that! I got a 3GS yesterday and I have a Mac - how do I do that?

Jailbreaking makes your phone run slower.
Just an FYI....I chose not to do it this time around. |

Yeah, and apps aren't approved for a reason.

A few of my friends have 3GS' and their phones are fast regardless. The few peoplei know still on 2Gs do experience a lag, but it doesnt stop them from benefiting from the performance enhancements that jailbreaking offers |

I can't get that to work on Windows, maybe it's because I have Vista.. but I can't get the Ringtones folder to go into iTunes.

Okay, now I'm just pissed.
I think I'll be forever stuck with the piano rift as my ringtone.
