Posts: 568 (09/25/2009 9:23 PM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts	So I'm currently taking the steps to get into nursing school next fall!( I am finishing my student teaching next semester and graduating with and Early Childhood Ed. Degree). Anywho, I roam through a nursing website and just read something from a poster that literally made my stomach curl. Im not sure if it's the way she wrote it but.... puss, rank smell, fat nasty lazy cry babies, disgusting sores with flakey chunky skin picked off all over the bedding, etc, etc!!!!! ..... yucky icky things like puss-filled sores and putting foley's up a stinky yoohoo and bloody dressing changes? G-R-O-S-S!!!!!! " EW!! I wonder if there is some kind of pill/medicine I could take during clinicals so I don't get sick! I do have a sensative stomach but this will not stop me from becoming a nurse! (The girl posting is currently an STNA thinking she may not be able to do nursing). I of course would and could not think of my patients as whining, fat, lazy, etc, etc! This is a part of nursing that would not bother me, but the smells and my stomach may not stand it!

LOL You say that now. Give it time. I was an aide at one time and I did have these types of people but actually choosing a different career because of a weak stomach!? I don't know. Could you get used to it?

Posts: 17009 (09/25/2009 9:39 PM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts	I've gagged before during clinicals, but I got over it. You do get used to it...or at least it's getting easier for me. I wouldn't turn away from nursing just because you have a "weak" stomach. But don't misunderstand...it's nasty work. But look at it this way - you can wear all the personal protective equipment you want. (i.e. gloves, gown, mask, face shield, surgical cap, shoe protectors, etc.)

I never thought I would start to think of my patients as lazy, obnoxious, etc etc etc...but it happens. Especially when they're yelling at you for not doing what they want on THEIR time. But Lord knows most of my patients refuse to work, so I'm paying for them to sit on their asses and rack up thousands of dollars in medical bills. Obviously it was one of those days.

Im just hoping it's more rewarding and that I can get used to seeing these things. I will not say get used to the smells because GOD knows I have a nose of a hound dog and am very sensative to smells!

Im getting so excited to start though! GAAA next fall seems like forever. Im actually taking the required CPR class tomorrow for admission. I already have the childcare CPR but I need healthcare provider CPR. Now that I remember this I probably should go to bed since its in the early am..

I would say suctioning the trachs of people with pneumonia (without inline suction) would be the most puke-inducing thing I've had to do. I had one dude who was literally bubbling slimy mucus bubbles out of his trach, out of his trach mask, and all over his neck. Either that or the guy with the pressure ulcer that got so deep you could touch his sacrum... like... the bone.
