I just watched the first episode of Season 1 online, and now I'm starting episode 2 and they're showing all this crap I haven't seen on the "previously on Dollhouse" segment. WTH? And who is Alpha?

Maybe you watched the unaired pilot rather than the aired one? They're very different.
In the episode you watched, was there a kidnapping plot involving a young girl? As kerlifries said we don't actually find out who Alpha is until near the end of the season, but in the aired pilot someone gets a file with his name on it and some info inside. |

I don't see how I could've missed any episodes. On the episode I watched it started with some British woman discussing Actives with a potential client.
It showed Echo going about her daily routine. It showed her saving some drug addicted girl from a sleazy guy in a bar, dancing at a wedding with some guy, and
finally trying to trick an FBI detective into spilling his guts re: what he knew about Dollhouse.
I didn't see anything about a kidnapped girl. Caroline was mentioned, but we didn't see Eliza Dushku's character before she became an Active. I'll hold off on the Alpha thing for now. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't already supposed to know who he/she is. |

No, you get little titbits about Alpha throughout the season but you don't find out who he is for a while

Alpha (Alan Tudyk) - he was Wash in Firefly/Serenity. He kinda went off the deep end and killed some people and escapes, then he helps Ballard get into
Dollhouse (Ballard thought he Kepler - the guy who designed some stuff for the Dollhouse)
Also Dr. Sanders (Amy Acker, who was Fred on Angel) turned out to have been an active know as Whiskey who was reprogrammed to be Dr. Sanders (after Sanders died) since Alpha tore up her face. I think both those discoveries (who Alpha was) and about Whiskey were at the end of Season 1, possibly the same episode. |
