He knows basic commands, appears to be housetrained, and even slept through the night! We left him yesterday to see how he would react and sure enough, he howled like crazy. I felt so bad for leaving him but eventually, we will have to leave him for a few hours to go to work and run errands. We left him in the basement with his bed, blankets, toys, and made sure it was plenty warm down there for him. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to help him with this? I feel so bad!

He went through 2 families and 2 shelters So I can't leave him alone and bring him to doggie daycamp near my house. They told me when I adopted him not to use a cage because he had been traumatized by his former family because of it. How they knew that I have no idea but I could never put him in a cage and would rather pay the 20 bucks to have him running around and playing with other beagles (he has 2 beagle girlfriends at camp named Brittany and Bailee ) and dogs. My dad calls him the Tom Jones of the doggy camp. Sorry I didn't have any tips on leaving the pup home alone I got all wrapped up in the fact that you got a beagle

My puppy has the same. We waited over a week before we left him alone. Now he tries to escape the 6ft fence and he chews up the house. He ate my brand new snuggie.

Dogs will start to recognize your "going out" ritual, such as grabbing your keys, purse, shoes, etc. It's going to be weird but try to elongate the time it takes you to do this. For example, take your time tying your shoes so puppy sees it and has time to "cope." Also, you should leave the house for two minutes and then come back. Do this and keep extending the time so you're not leaving puppy alone for 5 hours right off the bat.

I actually do those things for him, and leave his doggie door open so he knows he still has his home and his familiar area. I'm thinking I'm going to have to crate train him now though. I feel bad doing it, but there's not much else I can do.

He was three at the time, we were his third owners and his last owners went on vacation and never came back - they left him in their backyard and off they went. Socrates destroyed a metal crate, the reinforced crate my husband built him, and a door, before we figured it out. He likes to listen to reggae - so an hour or so before we have to leave, I turn it on and let it play. That way, he doesn't associate reggae with us leaving. It's something we just have on sometimes. As well, we take him (and our other husky Diego - he does just fine when left alone for a few hours) for a decent walk about half an hour before we go. Then, he comes home and generally goes to sleep. We don't make a big deal out of leaving. We just get up and go. We don't say anything, or pay any attention to the dogs in the actual act of leaving. I make it seem like any other time I go outside without them and my husband is home. And obviously, I make sure they have a lot of rawhides and toys to occupy themselves with if they do get up from their naps.

Thanks for all the advice. We just tried leaving him in the basement for a few minutes and stepped outside and sure enough, he howled like crazy. I just feel so bad leaving him, though I know we do have to! He follows us around the house like a shadow so leaving him is sad. We're going to try it a few more times through today to see if he gets any better.
