That is some nerve-wracking shit, just to read about it. I can't imagine how those parents are functioning.

The little 7-year-old girl who has schizophrenia? The one on Oprah?

That is her dad's website/blog about it. He comes across as a jerk at times, but honestly? I don't know that I wouldn't be a raging bitch in his shoes. http://www.latimes.com/features/health/la-he-schizophrenia29-2009jun29,0,4834892.story That is the LA Times article that was written on Jani. http://www.latimes.com/features/health/la-he-schizophrenia-pictures,0,5932182.photogallery And that is the photo gallery that goes along with the LA Times article. |

What's really scary to me is the fact that, outside of the verbal acknowledgement of these imaginary friends, the imaginary world, the hallucinations this
little girl has, she reminds me SO MUCH of my new student.
My new student is on hefty meds as it is (including a massive dose of an antipsychotic), and she's still struggling. I was reading some of the things Jani's dad says in his blog about how she behaves, and it's so similar to my new student. |

It's heartbreaking, mayer. And the thing is, the 7-year-old child has an IQ of 146, so she's bright enough to KNOW it's not normal. She knows she
sees and hears things that other people can't.
In one of the blogs, her dad mentions that Jani will warn them about things that are coming. She can apparently tell when a psychotic break is nearby, because 400 (one of her imaginary rats, one who tells her to do bad things) comes back, and the temperature in her Calalini (her world) rises. I just can't wrap my brain around it. I can turn my computer off when I get tired of reading about it, but her parents can't ever turn it off. It's so heartbreaking. |

He definitely says things that cause me to arch my eyebrows and be all "um..." but then I have to remember what he lives with. Maybe "jerk" isn't the right term. His blog is arresting, isn't it? I can't seem to stop. I'm on the April 28, 2009 entry, and I just keep reading and reading. I'm amazed at what he does, how far he goes for Jani. |

I read some of that stuff earlier this summer but read the rest of it the day she was on Oprah because I missed the episode. it's heartbreaking what this
child (and others like her) have to go through. She's just 7 now but what about when she's bigger and stronger and her parent's can't hold her
back when she gets violent. I think it's interesting how most of the people in her world have numbers as names like 400 and that girl 24/7.

Gemma wrote: His interviews on Oprah he seemed a bit douche baggy at times. Especially when he was talking about him and Susan having to separate and how January forced him to try to commit suicide. I didn't really take it as he was an asshole all along. More like a desperate father who is at wits end and really doesn't know what else to do. |

I think the parents are saints. I pray for their family.
I understand from reading the blogs that they both have a history of family and personal mental illness. I know personally that one of the reasons I dont ever want children is because I dont feel stable emotionally to be the kind of parent children deserve, imo. Would you have children if you or many members of your family had/have a diagnosed bipolar, schizophrenic or other severe psychiatric disorder? |

Pliant Pineapple wrote:Babymaking is a total crapshoot!! yes. lol. But for things like schizophrenia, scientists KNOW that it is a strong genetic possibility. Like, you may be ok, but if your mother, brother, uncle, were all diagnosed schizophrenic or manic depressive, do you still feel its just as unlikely your kids will be free from the same diagnosis? Studies show these severe illnesses do appear over and over in families. |

It would depend on a lot of other factors for me, I think. But I've not been living with mentally ill family members for years so I can't really answer
it.

The last post from Dad on the blog is on October 10, I think, and I'm dying to know what is going on. I hope they can figure something out and find
somewhere safe to put her. It's so sad that they are having to live in two separate apartments because they can't ever leave Jani alone with the baby.

Ok, using the links here, I didn't get ALL of the Dad's posts....I didn't see anything about him hitting her or the Mom. I gotta go read more and
find what I missed.
What a compelling story. Heartbreaking. |

I wish they could find a place for the girl soon. How they are living now is no way to live. And I feel sorry for the son who has to grow up in that
environment.
