Kind of gross nurse story ahead... Four days ago they sent a 89-year-old woman to my facility for rehab after a fracture. They told us their wound nurse said
"she has a superficial wound on her coccyx from the fall." I'm thinking a tiny abrasion. We usually don't accept patients with major pressure
wounds unless they are already being treated by a wound care specialist. So, she comes to us and as I'm admitting her I do a skin assessment and I see what
looks like a tiny tunnel. So, I take a q-tip and try to measure the depth. It ends up being as wide and as deep as my pinky once I cleaned it. She said it felt
like I was touching bone and I was. This wound will likely kill this woman and I feel so helpless. Nothing I'm doing for wound care is slowing it and
helping it at all. Ugh! They lied to us to get rid of her and not take credit for it.
I'm so angry at the hospital here.

Do you have any recourse at all? How can they say they were caring for a patient when her wounds weren't even being cleaned? Does she have a physician that
can take a look at it?
Poor lady.

As long as when you did your initial assessment the intake form stated that a Decub ulcer was present on admission, then you are free from responsibility for
causing it. It's not much but it's better than nothing. Maybe they can surgically debride the wound.

It's been reported. Our physician and I have been working on it together. Yes, I documented for hours on it.
She was living at home with her son when she fell and went to the hospital. |
