does the box they give you to get more channels actually work as a dvr if you set the menu to record something, or do you actually have to have a tape in the
vcr??

It has to be a DVR box to record. you can tell if it is if you press the "My DVR" button and a new screen pops up. If it's DVR you'll see
something. If not... nada
