In general why do they say that to him? Does he not know who his father is? What is the meaning behind this?

The TV announcer just explained it, I think it was a comment he said in the past to them? I think it came back to bite him in the ass, so they repeat is to
him. Something like that.

After a loss during the regular season to the New York Yankees, a frustrated Martinez told reporters, "What can I say? I tip my hat and call the Yankees my daddy." Hence, the chant by Yankees fans during the playoffs - though given the final outcome, Pedro ended up with the last laught.http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/10170 |

A couple of years ago when he was with the Red Sox the Yankees beat him pretty badly and during the press conference after the game Pedro said,"The
Yankees are my daddy" in reference to them beating him.

It will go down in Yankees-Red Sox lore as the Daddy Speech, in honor of this highlight in Martinez's interview session after a 6-4 loss to New York on
Friday: "What can I say? I tip my hat and call the Yankees my daddy."

Ah yes but then after the great comeback of 2004 the Yankees were then taunted at Fenway with "Who's Your Papi?"
One of the great moments of the Red Sox/Yankees rivalry, that's for sure. |
