My fiance and I
are paying for our wedding ourselves. Photography is really important to me, but the prices are just insane. Ughhh.
I'm overwhelmed by the cost of wedding photography.

Why does every package have to start at like 2700?

Ask a friend, seriously you would be surprised how many people do it either just for a portfolio or as a hobby. Most of them don't suck either!

Between the 2 of you, do you guys know anyone at all that likes to take photos even as a hobby and is decent at it? Cousins, neighbors, co-workers,
mailman, the girl who makes your coffee at Starbucks, grocery store cashier, aunt, uncle, a friend of your friend's brother, anyone? Start asking around
and let people know you're looking. They may know someone who can help you out. Good luck.

You could get a friend or a student to do it for much less and it does NOT mean they suck. Most wedding photographers are just students or hobbyists that
decided to do it for a business. Even with expensive prices it does not mean they are great photographers.

If there's a local college that offers a photography program, I'm sure you could find a student that is looking to do it for really cheap or even free
just so they can build up their portfolio.
Also, try posting on your local board on TheKnot.com and you might get some suggestions. |

I agree with using a student. I know people who have gone to community colleges and art schools and have asked for the best student or have had teachers
recommend students. Most of them are willing to take a few hundred dollars and a free meal in exchange for their services. Some will even do it just to pass
out their cards/contact info to guests and build a following.

A couple friends of mine got married before school started and they got someone from Fargo. The pictures were unimpressive.
There's a lady here that does beautiful work! She's pricey, but I love her stuff: http://www.shawnanoel.net/index.cfm?catID=2 |

Use a student! In fact, hire 2 or 3 of them! That way you end up with a lot for waayy cheap.

^^ That Shawna Noel girl was awesome! I loved all her creative shots. Too bad I don't live in Fargo

I know it is expensive, but it is worth it. I wouldn't hire anyone who did not have a portfoilo of work I could see first. You may find a student with a
great portfolio

Sometimes I get annoyed when people say "Use a student!". Students pay a great deal for their training and sometimes have more technical training
than working "professionals". Remember you get what you pay for
I'd pay more for my pictures than my dress honestly. But PHOT was my major. . |

I know a guy who my friend dated that is NOT a professional photographer. However, he shoots amazing photos. We actually met him after he'd shot a
friend's wedding. I think if you can find someone with a good portfolio...hit them up!

RedLampDistrict wrote:Their protfolios or website will give you a great idea of what kind of work they do. You can even ask if they have references for people they've worked for previously, if they have experience. It's not like anyone is telling you to hire a student without looking at their work first. When my cousin used both a professional photographer and a student photographer, the student photographer provided the most amazing shots. She saw both of their portfolios beforehand, but decided they'd both be able to provide the shots she wanted, so she hired them both. |

There are so many talented people out there, especially students. Look into it. Compensate them some money for their time and hire a few good students. You can
PM me if you want me to help look in your area, I'd be glad to help.
