Question for Nurses/those in nursing school

Posts: 399 (11/02/2009 11:33 AM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts	So after a lot of time and thought I have decided to pursue a career in nursing, with the hopes of one day becoming a labor and delivery nurse. My degree is totally unrelated (Marketing) and I need some tips as to what sort of path I should build towards getting into nursing school. My plan as of now is to take all the pre-reqs at a community college to save money, hopefully do well in them...and then apply. Also--has anyone worked full time while going through nursing school? I'd love to live off loans and just get through the schooling as quickly as possible, but I'm already paying off another degree. Any feedback would be much appreciated

Posts: 1328 (11/02/2009 11:39 AM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts	I had my BS in an unrelated field and went back for my BSN. I did an accelerated program (12 months) and graduated in May. I had to take one year of pre-reqs (like the A&P, micro, etc that I didn't take for my first degree.) The accelerated program is hard but if you want to be done, I'd recommend it. They don't recommend working during it because it is pretty intense, so you'd have more loans, but you can also start working quicker.

If you go through a program at a community college, you should apply before you take your prereqs since there will probably be a waiting list. And take prereqs while you're on the list. I know people who have worked while in nursing school. It's doable...but very hard. A lot of people don't realize how demanding and time consuming nursing school is. I'd talk to someone at the school you want to go to and they can advise you on what to do. Good luck!

Posts: 2948 (11/02/2009 11:47 AM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts	Ok....I'm currently in my first semester of nursing school and I work between 25-30 hours a week. While it's REALLY hard its doable. I would love to live off loans but I have a similar situation as you where I already have a degree and tons of loans to pay back. Adding more isn't really the smart thing for me to do. My advice to you is to really do your research on a program with a school you REALLY like. Find out the schools ranking/wait list system and how your credits and grades transfer as this will affect your GPA status and ranking status. Really get to know your adviser and dean of the program - they will try to help you out and give you good advice. Good luck. Nursing is hard but it's a really good field.

I worked full time and I was doing at least 2 or 3 prerequisite courses a semester at a community college. It kept me busy and it forced me to work on time management. If it's really in your heart to get into nursing school, you will do whatever it takes to get those grades! I am in my 1st semester of nursing school and it's crazy! I decided not to work this semester because I wanted to see how much I can handle. Living off loans and having a bf to support me has been helpful.

Posts: 10452 (11/02/2009 11:53 AM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts	Question for the new grads or current nurses: is it harder to get a job for US graduates compared to the foreign nurses? I've been noticing that a lot of people schooled here in the US had a harder time getting a job compared to nurses were recruited from the Philippines. I'm new to this but majority of the nurses I have seen at the hospital are Filipino... and I know they're not schooled from the US.

Posts: 6694 (11/02/2009 12:07 PM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts	I have friends who are nurses right now and graduated this past spring and def making more moolah than I. I remember them studying their asses off for NCLEX and I was so happy for them when they all passed it.
