The biggest threat to life in a survivable airplane crash is fire. If you are still alive when the plane lands--- the fire is the biggest problem. There are numerous accounts of people who survive plane crashes, get out of the plane, then have jetfuel/flames land on them and theyre engulfed.
Having a leather bag or leather jacket to cover yourself/protect your face from flames and jetfuel is a huge plus.
Thankfully I always keep my favorite cowhide close at hand for these types of situations.
