I have 2 cousins named Ed...both on the same side of the family. My mom's sister had a son and named him after her father (Ed.) Then my mom's brother
who is Ed Jr. had a son and named him Ed III. So I have 2 cousins, an uncle and grandfather named Ed.

It's about more than just the name, obviously.
I would be pissed and upset. What the OP's sister is doing is just plain mean. |

I'd be upset. A name IS a big deal, at least to me. It's what people know you as. Hopefully she changes her mind at a later date.

Here are your options:
a.) Buy the ugliest pet you can find immediately and name it Jack. b.) When you send out the invites to her baby shower, misspell the kids name "Sis and Hubby are expecting baby JAKE in February" c.) Every time she says she can't wait to meet baby Jack, rub your stomach and say "Mmm Flapjacks" d.) Make sure she and hubby are sedated when they ask what to put on the birth certificate and come up with your own name for your nephew otherwise, I got no ideas.

If this is your biggest problem as you start your parenting life, then count your blessings.
And you arent pregnant yet right? So I would focus less on names. Name your kid Jack if you want, who cares. |

Honestly, I'd feel a lot more sympathy if you were currently pregnant with a son and your sister found out she was due before you, also with a son, and
decided to use the name you chose. You're not pregnant, your sister is. The first one pregnant automatically gets first dibs on names. She shouldn't
have to limit her name choice to names that you've not reserved for your hypothetical children. Besides, if you do conceive a son, you and your husband may
decide that you like a different name even better, or may decide that "Jack Everett" doesn't even fit the kid once he's arrived.

Okay, I guess maybe having been trying unsuccessfully for 18 or so months now, I'm a bit hormonal and wondering if we're ever going to get pregnant.
I've had two surgeries and have been on fertility meds for 16 out of 18 months. I guess she just assumed that since we "obviously weren't ever
going to have a kid, that gave her permission to use the name".
Whatever, it's a name. I get that some of you aren't understanding WHY I have a problem with the situation. It's about much more than a name. It's almost like she's saying, "hahahaha I can get pregnant and you can't. nanny nanny boo boo" Trust me, I know perfectly well that we may never have a baby. And ya know, if that's the case than so be it. Doesn't make her actions right....it's not like she's naming him after anyone in the family-she is just using the name because it's "cute". If I'm wrong for feeling the way I do, then so be it. That's just how I feel

Mistress Darcy wrote:I think it's more selfish to call dibs on a baby's name when you aren't even pregnant and have no assurance that you will get pregnant or that you will have a son if you do get pregnant, and that you want to tell a woman that IS pregnant with a boy that she can't use the name. More than one person can like the same name, it's the woman that gets pregnant first that has first choice. |

MorganC1980 wrote: Im so sorry that you are dealing with infertility issues, it cannot be easy. I think after reading this I can see what this whole "name" business is really about. You know it isnt about just wanting that name. It isnt that she took the name, its that it is pushes that button of fear about if you will ever getting pregnant, and that you think she is making fun of you. And also, you kind of diss her, say she is a bit of a non working messy loser, yet she is pregnant and you arent, and that has to hurt as well. |

otherwise, I got no ideas.
She wants to use it because it's "cute". I have said for 10+ years that
my little boys name was going to be Jack.
