So I got an email from Facebook this morning telling me that they had to disable my account due to cybercriminals hacking into my account in an attempt to
impersonate me. I followed the instructions on the email they sent me in terms of trying to fix the issue, but I have yet to hear back from them (this whole
debacle happened 19 hours ago according to my gmail. Have any of you had this issue and if so, how long did it take for the whole thing to right itself out?
I'm kind of freaked because I've had friends and family getting into contact with me because they can't get onto my page (I guess they take it down
while this whole thing is pending). I'm in a foreign country and so it's one of my only means of communication to people back in the States. Grrr
cybercriminals!

Are you sure the email was legit? Sounds like it could be phishing.

Yeah that sounds like phishing. Did you check your Facebook to see if it was really disabled before replying to that email?

This email does seem legit. It's from the Facebook Security Team, it has my secret question when a password is forgotten, and it gives me a link that sends
me here: http://www.facebook.com/security
I clicked on the link that provides me at the end where it says 'I believe my account has been disabled by mistake' and I sent them the email with my information (name, DOB, email for login). |

what did the email ask of you? DEFINITELY sounds like a scam though. why would "cybercriminals" attack ur account and facebook not be able to control
it? doesnt make any sense.

I checked before I sent the email and whenever I sign in, it comes up with a red box that says my account has been disabled.

That is so weird.
Maybe you can e-mail FB security directly from the website and maybe forward that e-mail to them and see what they say. |

Hi Amanda,
Your account has been temporarily suspended for security purposes. Our systems indicate that your Facebook account has been compromised by cybercriminals attempting to impersonate you. These criminals often will try to trick your friends into sending them money by claiming that you are stuck in a far away location and need assistance. It is possible that your email account was compromised as well. As such, we have sent this email to all email accounts recently associated with your account. Obtaining access to a victim's email is one of the primary ways these cybercriminals have been operating. Please take the following steps to regain control of your account: 1. Select new, unique passwords for any email addresses associated with your Facebook account. 2. Respond to this email with the answer to your security question: Security Question Here: 3. Closely follow the instructions provided in our follow up email. We also encourage you to visit the following page for more information about Facebook security and how to report suspicious material: http://www.facebook.com/security Thanks, Facebook Security That was what was sent to me. This is the email address it came from: abuse+nblbynq@facebook.com |

After digging around on facebook, there's a form you can send in if you believe your account has been hacked for the money wiring scam. It says on the form
that if the form is sent in, facebook can disable the account.
So I guess what happened, is they caught what was going right away and disabled the account and are trying to fix it or whatever. It just sucks. And thanks for making me have a freaking heart attack you guys about the emails being sent to me |

If you're IN a foreign country and are Facebooking from there, something you posted might have tripped some kind of security screening Facebook is doing.
The scam is: someone hacks your account, pretends to be you, emails or messages everyone on your friends list claiming you're in a foreign country, have gotten into some kind of trouble with the law or lost your passport, etc., and asks everyone to send you large sums of money. Your friends and family freak out, send the money to an account the scammer set up (usually Western Union or something similar) and makes off with the money before you are able to let everyone know you're fine. If you're legitimately in another country, you need to communicate with Facebook and let them know it's actually you. And find out what was posted or what triggered the security measure, so you can prevent this from happening again. |

Ok, I'm glad that it isn't some elaborate scam and that facebook has really disabled the account. That's good, in a sense
I did tell that I'm in a foreign country in the emails that I sent them, so hopefully it'll be back up in a couple of days. Thanks for all your help though
