Can't you just buy one instead? I imagine that would be alot cheaper in the long run than paying $5 every month.

I might buy one but if something goes wrong with your modem you buy, Comcast is not responsible.. and I hear that if you buy a modem, you can't be sure you
will be getting the latest hardware updates or whatever from them.

According to this, Comcast sends firmware updates to your modem whether you buy it or lease it if it's on the approved list: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/comcast/2.1_Modems. And yeah that's true that Comcast wouldn't be responsible but a cable modem isn't really expensive to replace in the small chance that it actually did break. In the course of 1 year of paying $5 per month to rent Comcast's modem, you could instead buy 1-2 cable modems. |

Thank you ^ . That helps but I also read that if you subscribe to comcast digital voice, you have to have their cable modem they provide because of 911 or
something. They don't want to be liable if you can't reach 911 ?

I'm not a comcast customer but from every other cable company I've had - they've always charged me a $5-$6 rental fee. Charter did it and so did
Cable One

This is what their customer service tells me..
You can't buy a modem if you have triple play package. But if you just have cable internet, maybe you
can buy a modem from their approved modem list.
"With your internet service with Comcast, you will be given a primary email username wherein you can create up to 6 secondary email accounts, and you may use that to download McAfee and access ESPN360 in comcast.net We did increase your modem rental so that your monthly rate for your internet service will not be affected. And so that your service monthly rate for internet will remain the same. since you do have our phone service, you will need to use our EMTA modem so as to connect with our system." |
