Um my dad was having radiating pain, mostly to his shoulders & back (where it was hard for him to lift his arms). The problem was, he had diabetic
neuropathy which caused muscle spasms so they just attributed his pain to that. So his was put off AND they didn't tell him for an entire year after
discovering it!
When they do the biopsy, they drill holes into the pelvic bones (they did it to my dad through the back) and pull out liquid marrow for testing. They do it under anaesthetic. I'm sure there are more guidelines for testing, but that's what I can remember. |

Hmm... I'm sure his doctors will love me when I show up with a handy dandy notebook, full of potential diagnoses!
Thanks for the words of advice. I'm gonna check on diabetes testing. I don't know if that test was ever done... |

I hope your brother feels better. But, please, definitely google and ask friends for help. Advocate for your brother. Don't trust the doctors.

I know you're really worried and I don't want to be disrespectful by saying that this, but your story totally sounds like one of those Mystery
Diagnosis shows. Your SIL's indifference, his sudden unexplainable illness. You sure she's not pouring Drano in his cereal or something?

My daughter (she's 20) started out with strep throat in Aug 2006, then it was a kidney infection then it was mono. The reason I had to post is because
within I would say a week after she should have been okay (taking antibiotics) she started throwing up. She threw up daily at least 5-10 times a day for
months! She was so miserable, at night I would stay awake and help her and try and keep her hydrated. So her first hospitalization was for 5 days. In November.
She was down to 96 pounds from 118. Fluids, antibiotics and 40 tests later they tell me she has to have her gallbladder removed. So they took it out and it was
FULL of gallstones. But she started eating again but she got a little cold and the vomiting took over. Second hospitalization was 4 days and they sent us home
even though she was still not eating and throwing up.
Third hospitalization was in January for 5 days. She was discharged with a diagnosis of Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome. Which is basically like something triggers an episode of vomiting for which they have NO way of telling you why. Or how to make it stop. All treatment is symptomatic. They admitted her because of dehydration but sent us home with a bunch of Zofran and something else for nausea and told us GOOD LUCK in a sense. Her lowest weight was 88 pounds. I lost so many hours of sleep, she went through so much and you know we had to deal with it. The one thing that kept her from I think dying on me was I bought those ENSURE shakes. It was the only thing she could keep down. After like 9 months of vomiting daily multiple times she told me one night that she was feeling better (in her stomach) and that the shakes really helped her sleep. So I bought 15 six packs of every flavor and I think it helped her having some nutrients in her that the throwing up finally stopped in late February. I thought we were in the clear until she had to be hospitalized again in April for a week because it started again. But she was back to eating meals with us (although her appetite still isn't what it used to be) and the shakes helped her get back up there to 118 (as of last month) and since the last trip to the hospital she hasn't had an episode. (Knock on wood) Yes, she had every test done and re-done at Children's Hospital 2 and 3 times and they could tell us ZIP. Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome, it might be something to look up. Although it's one of those things that yeah, it has a name for what's going on, but not much of an answer on how to fix or stop it. The gallbladder could be causing bile to leak into the stomach and cause a reaction too. Once the stomach is weakened from the throwing up (it is a MUSCLE, and it tends to become used to habitual things) any and every little problem can trigger the vomiting. You need to become almost an advocate for him. Make sure during the down times he has Gatorades and such. Those ENSURE shakes aren't cheap (like 7-9 bucks for 6) but I thank God there was something that had vitamins and nutrients so my daughter wasn't in a sense STARVING you know? I'm so feeling you and your brother you have no idea. What we went through was so awful, but I give my girl a big thumbs up because she showed me then how much of a fighter she was, even though I know I would have given up hope a long time before her!! Don't hesitate to go to the ER if he is dehydrated or he feels like he can't even sit up or too weak to talk and stuff. DON'T HESITATE. They might act like you are making a big deal out of it, but the only way to hydrate some one who can't keep fluids down is by IV. Elektrolyte imbalances can affect the heart BIG TIME. He is weak from vomiting and the lack of nutrition. I told my mom after the gallbladder surgery (it stopped the vomiting for about 2 weeks and that was it) that it looked like my daughter was starving to death. Tell them tough shit, hook him up and check him out. Dehydration can kill a person. Vomiting causes dehydration. I'm praying for you guys!

my 14 y/o son is going thru something almost exactly the same. he has been in and out of the hospital, had every test known to man ( ct,u/s,capsule,hida,upper
and lower gi etc etc), is even doing virtual school because he is too sick to go to regular school. his crp(c reactive protein) was elevated so they checked
for cancer and his wbc's keep going up, it was all negative. they have ruled out crohns, celiacs,uc,diverticulitis, tumors, cancers, food allergies and last
time they checked, his gallbladder was ok. we are redoing the hida scan this week. the gi dr is also looking closer at his pancreas . it's almost like he
isn't producing the enzymes to break down fat. all of this happened after his appendix were taken out in april. he lost 22 lbs in 6 weeks, barely eats and
is on lots of meds but the only thing that eases the pain are narcotic pain pills. you can shoot me a message if you want. it sounds like we're both going
thru similar things.

I'm praying for him.
BS would have been one of the first test if they're at all competent. Check to make sure they've done an echo on his heart. Also, if he was having problems with his gall bladder and his pancreas is enlarged special attention should be shown to the liver. I'm sure they've run all the blood test, but it never hurts to ask them and see what all they've done and what all they know. Sometimes it's little things that are overlooked that solve cases. And as bad as it sounds, maybe testing for heavy metal or other kinds of poisoning. |

No updates today. He had a stress test done on his heart, a scan of his heart, and an abdominal ultrasound again today. No results just yet. The IV fluids are
helping him to feel better, and the pain management is helping the pain.
I so appreciate all of the words of advice in this thread. And I'm actually writing down specific things to ask the doctors when I go. I hate that others are going through/have gone through it.

His mom`s a nurse, so
when he started losing weight, they took him in the hospital. His gallbladder was damaged, but they didn`t think it needed to be removed. They did determine
that the cause of it was frequent use of tetracycline for acne. It apparently ate a thin layer from his stomach, making it impossible to absorb the proper
nutrients, and making his stomach aggrevated by the most basic things.
