My sister has taken the plunge and put her story, Fingerprints, online at a site called Authonomy. In just a week she climbed the ranks at a rapid rate
breaking into the top 400 (when she posted it she was ranked around 3000-4000). At the end of each month, the top five most 'backed' manuscripts on
authonomy are given for review by HarperCollins to be considered for publication. Her novel is a Sci-Fi/Fantasy novel, the first in what she plans to be a
series of books, also please note that it is geared more towards the Young Adult crowd, but already reviewers of all
ages seem to been enjoying it.
Her reason for writing it? She had read the Twilight books (among some other current young adult books out there) and was feeling discouraged by the lack of quality of some of these books for teens (she teaches high school math at a school for the deaf), she felt that it wouldn't be right for her to constantly complain about it without at least trying to write a story herself...so she did, her two beta readers for the book encouraged her to see what it would take to submit the manuscript to editors - that's when she found authonomy. In addition to teaching math, she's always loved science as well and so she's definitely written about things that she knows (and set them, in my opinion, in an amazing and rich world).
