How does phone "jailbreaking" work? |

I hear a lot of you talk about unlocking and "jailbreaking" cell phones. How does it work? Can anyone explain it? I am curious.
Thanks.

Paging thegoat lol! He can probably break it down better than anyone on here.
My phone is jailbroken, and I absolutely love it! There are so many 3rd party apps that the Apple store doesn't allow that Cydia does. I also love how I can customize my springboard layout with themes. It just really allows you to make your phone do whatever you want. |

Do you even own a smartphone?

I have a four-year old Nokia that doesn't even have a camera. I am just curious about the procedure.

Basically, it lets you add third party applications to a cell phone. Extremely easy to do. You can get directions anywhere online. However, unless you have a
smartphone, there's really no point.

Unlocking is the process of modifying a phone to use on carriers other than those intended for it in the first place (ie using a BB Storm on Sprint). You can
unlock a GSM phone only for another GSM carrier, and the same with CDMA. in the US, At&t and t-mobile are GSM...verizon and sprint are CDMA.
"Jailbreaking" is a software mod specific to iPhones and iPod touches. It opens up the firmware to allow third party applications not avaliable in
the app store.

I thought you could add any apps to your cell phone anyway.

KellySD wrote: Only ones that are in the app store and have been approved by apple and AT&T. In cydia (the main source of repositories and packages/third party apps), you'll find apps that allow you to have custom backgrounds, use the phone as a modem, and even download paid app store apps for free |

Like you can't take it into Verizon for them to activate it. .or can you? Because they don't use sim cards at the V. |

I have verizon and really don't want to switch (I currently have a discounted plan because of my dad's business relations), so my plan is super cheap...and any other plan I get will be discounted too. I really want an iphone, but would have to (well want to) stay with Verizon. I mean, I don't need to know the inner technological workings of the situation, but how would I go about setting it all up and such? |

Verizon can't support an iPhone (iPhone=GSM, Verizon is on a CDMA network).
is there another phone you might be interested in? |
