For this Friday I have a new book for her to read. Other than that I've been knitting some hats. I thought a cute Vera Bradley scarf would be cute one time (do they even make scarves?). I'm also going to get her a stuffed hippo (she loves hippos for whatever reason). I found a pink ribbon courage bracelet that I want to get her. So far that is 5 weeks but she's scheduled for 16 treatments. Anyone have any suggestions?

So my mom was just diagnosed with breast cancer. She starts chemo on Friday and I wanted to get her a little treat or trinket for each session. I'm trying
to think of good time wasters or little gifts that will brighten her day. I want it to be something she can look forward to during her treatments.

Make her a tie blanket! Patients tend to get cold during chemo.
Does she have an Ipod? You should get her something that plays music, or give her an Itune download gift card. |

That's really sweet of you.
Vera Bradley does make scarves. I don't know if they sell them online, but you can get them in locations where they sell
the bags. What about some of those handheld battery operated games? Also magazines/books to pass the time.

My mom went through chemo, I wish I had thought of doing that for her.
I went to most of her sessions with her and sat with her, but it would have been fun
doing gifts. She just told me the other day that she was grateful I went with her. Maybe a mix CD one day, a photo album with pictures of the two of you, a
puzzle, a laptop or DVD player with a funny movie to distract her, a board game, a cute or relaxing eye mask to help her rest while she's there, a handful
of trashy magazines, some warm and fuzzy socks...those are just some ideas.

It really depends on how long each treatment is. Some patients aren't really there for that long, like maybe 20-25 minutes and the nurse is doing things
with them, so they may not have the free time or hands to do something like a crossword.

It's a sweet idea. Similar idea, for my boyfriend's dialysis care packages I'll send little things like a cd, crossword/seek and finds, a new
book/magazine, handheld game. Really just anything to make him smile that day and get him though another treatment.
She'll appreciate the sentiment above all. The thing he liked the best was a quilt from his grandma because he freezes in the clinic, so whoever mentioned socks and the like... |

When my sister was diagnosed one of her friends had a hat party for her. She invited all of my sister's friends and they all brought her a hat. On chemo
days I would just show up at the hospital with a bunch of fresh flowers. She loved them and told me later they brought some beauty into her then dark world.

Thanks for the ideas! I definitely added cozy socks to the list of gifts. Flowers too. And trashy magazines. Each session is going to be at least 2 hours long
(every 3 weeks it will be closer to 3 - 3 1/2). I'm the one taking her to each session. I've been knitting hats for her, so I've got that covered.
(I figured knitting during her sessions would be a good time waster for both of us).
Thanks again! |

It depends on the session. My brother had to go in for a couple days for his because it was last minute intensive to just extend what time he had left. You
might also want to consider things for your mom when she isn't feeling well after. She'll want to sleep alot, so maybe some nice, easy to clean
jammies, a nice blanket...slippers...dvds to watch....a plant or something by the bed...things like that. And above all, spending time with her. That was all
my brother wanted when he was sick....even if he was sleeping, he wanted me in the room with him.

You should get her a paddle ball (those little plastic or wooden planks with the rubber ball attached), when my mom had breast cancer the doctor told her to
play with one of those to get her strength back in the arm/side that she had a mastectomy and lymph nodes removed on. I don't know if you mom had or will
have a mastectomy, but if she does that's a good idea. My mom got amazingly good at paddle ball and still is 20+ years later.
Another thing is lavender mist/spray, they sell it online and usually in hospital gift shops. My mom and I bought it at a speciality cancer/rehab shop and it's the absolute best thing for women to calm the body and especially if she goes into early menopause because of the breast cancer (it's amazing for hot flashes). She can spray it on her pillow, or a robe, on her pjs or just in the air and let it settle, it's really light and calming. |
