First of all, any world class official should have seen that. A guy handling the ball TWICE.
That being said, I need to read up more on soccer history and nationalistic insults. A while back, a player from Argentina used a hand ball to score a goal in the World Cup. People ended up calling it the "Hand of God" goal. I was just reading some comments from international papers and a few replies called the Thierry play the "Hand of Frog" goal. Which caused a ruckus. Now I trying to figure out how the term "frog" is an insult. |

It's the refs responsibility to make the right call. What is he going to stop and say "hey no guys I touched the ball, let's have a do over?"
Not like in basketball someone gets fouled but says "you know what ref I wasn't fouled". Plus he didn't say he "cheated" he
admitted it was a handball. If someone is called for defense holding in the NFL are they cheating? No, they did something incorrectly and it's the refs job
to spot it and give them a 10 yard penalty.

I can't believe that a guy not only admits that he cheated, but is proud of it. Soccer is normally a more honorable game than basketball.

Ferris Bueller Youre My Hero wrote:imo fouls and handballs aren't directly comparable. Also I don't understand the people saying he didn't do it on purpose. He handled the ball twice in one play and you can clearly see the deliberate hand motions. Some people are claiming that it was a reflex (which I seriously doubt). |

Regardless if fouls and handballs are not the same thing, they are both infractions that should be called by a ref. When the umpires or officials make a bad
call in the MLB, they don't say that the player cheated. They say that the ref made a bad call. I think the same thing is the case here. He isn't
responsible for stopping play and saying "I touched the ball"...that's 100% the responsibility of the ref.

Ferris Bueller Youre My Hero wrote:I disagree about the first part of what you said. A good, direct comparison that I remember was the "purse snatching" incident involving Alex Rodriguez a few years ago against the Red Sox during the playoffs I believe. Obviously it didn't get nearly this much attention as it wasn't as crucial of a play and baseball doesn't have nearly this big of an audience. Regarding your statement, "When the umpires or officials make a bad call in the MLB, they don't say that the player cheated", it depends who you ask whether or not people blame the player or the ref. From the athlete's perspective, it shouldn't be a game of "Let's see how much I can get away with before I get caught". Fouls are allowed (to some extent obviously due to the nature of the game)....handballs aren't ever. That's the HUGE difference. I do agree that it is the job of the ref to make these calls and unfortunately they don't always call them. No, I wouldn't expect Henry to go out and say "Oh yes, I intentionally hit the ball with my hand twice". I just think that he's handling the aftermath of this situation poorly so that's why I've lost some respect for him. And on that note, I need to hit the sack. |

KellySD wrote: Do you mean you don't know why they are saying "frog"? If that's the case, it's because he's French. Or are you wondering how the term came about to be an insult targeting Frenchmen? There are a ton of theories as to why the French are called frogs in a derogatory manner. Some being that they sound like frogs when they speak, or because they eat frog legs or because some say it goes back to Charlemagne's family name (Froggeaux). |

From the athlete's perspective, it shouldn't be a game of "Let's see how much I can get away with before I get caught".I understand your point of view there. I don't know that much about soccer but I do watch a lot of ESPN and I have read perspectives of several analysts and I just don't think all the blame should be placed on him. I don't know him at all but I can see how his statement might be frowned upon. He did intentionally hit the ball, it's very obvious (and he said it wasn't deliberate). But he is right (in my eyes) that the ref should have made the call. |
