I'm a firm believer in evolution, so I was wondering if anyone had any opinions or insight as to why there are gay people...from an evolution stand point.
I was reading a proposed theory somewhere that said it might have to do with the over population of the world, and it is nature's way of kind of balancing
that out. I guess this theory also said that this would take place by subconscious "messages" that the mother would send to her baby. In essence, it
was saying that when a mother lives in an over populated environment, the stimuli related to that gets transmitted to her fetus. This was also proposed as an
explanation as to why there are more gay people in urban areas (which are densely populated). But then on the other hand, it could just be that people are more
accepting of gay people in urban areas and that would be the reasoning for the higher number of gay individuals in those locations.

The only reason there are more gay people in urban environments is because the nightlife is more fabulous.

I remember my Anthropology teacher who had spent some times with the Native Americans and studied their culture, history said something to the effect of
prevention of overbreeding. He was also saying that in some of the Native's culture that there were actually 3 sexes: Male, Female and (I can't
remember the term he used, but basically where the gay people would fall in). The "3rd" sex usually took on the roles of Shamans or other care-taking
roles.

There is no "evolutionary reasoning"
There have been gay people around as long as there have been gay dolphins around. Sure, the cavemen dudes may not have known it, but some of them were gay too. |

DoesThatSparkle wrote: well okay i hope people don't beat up on me over this, but has there been a gene or lack of gene correlated to homosexuality? I dont think they have discovered such a thing, so homosexuality may be a nurture kinda deal (as opposed to nature). then would it still be an evolutionary matter? |

ILUVBubbleGUM wrote:Dammit you quoted me too soon. I went back and read what I wrote and it didn't make sense, so I edited to just say yes, there is an evolutionary reasoning for everything. And yes, there have been many scientific differences noted between heterosexual and homosexual people. It is known that the hypothalamus in homosexual males is that relative to the size of females. |

DoesThatSparkle wrote:That's pretty interesting what JCcai posted. I'm not an anthropologist or anything but as far as this is concerned, I wonder if it should be attributed to evolution since homosexual people still have the ability, and oftentimes the desire, to reproduce. If they somehow also had vestigial reproductive organs, maybe I'd think evolution, but what do I know? |

What is the evolutionary reasoning for gays? It's the same as any other abnormality. When genes combine or when a fetus is developing, mistakes can and do happen. There doesn't have to be a higher purpose. Some abnormalities are beneficial, some are neutral, and others negative. The name of the game is to survive and reproduce. And many gays have natural children so I would say that homosexuality is not a hindrance to evolution. |

It's not nature versus nurture. That debate has been quashed. It's now an interaction of the two. So if you have genetic dispositon towards something,
you also need to look at the environment to see how likely it is that the gene will be 'brought out'.

Because life was getting dull, what with living in caves, wearing itchy fur rags and clubbing each other, so Gays evolved and that's why we live in
decorated homes, wear fashionable clothes and the only clubbing we do, is in the nightclub.

curiousgeoff wrote: I know a few guys that grew up with all women in the house. I think they are more feminine than say a guy that was raised in an all guy household. They aren't gay, but some people think they are because of this. Girls/women the same thing. If she was raised with Dad as her role model, she may like to work on cars or other traditional "male things" and people assume she wants to be a guy and likes girls. If the kid is gay, he/she is going to be gay if he/she was raised in a home with both parents, all women or all men. |
