Mongrel is an offensive term, bordering on bigot.

no athlete is going to call a call against himself. NONE.
it was the refs job. intentional or not. if it was intentional, that's shitty on Thierry's part. if not, again that's what the ref is payed for. |

Henry shouldn't be banned forever. He is one of the most respected footballers in the world in this day and age. It's crappy that he intentionally did
it.. and then admitted to it (although I can't see how he could deny it when you see the footage anyway). But shit like this happens in football. It is
just more controversial as it was a defining game for both teams (a spot at the World Cup Finals) than if it were a normal league game. Stuff like this happens
all the time and until they bring in video replays like they do in rugby, cricket etc it will carry on.
To me Henry is a great as he is one of the few footballers who have won everything at club and international level and has always been a quality player. Reminds me of the Zidane incident at the last World Cup. Worldclass player in the final captaining his country, about to retire and headbutts an Italian. Now that was stupid Anyways, i do feel sorry for the Irish but like I said. Shit happens. Consult Fifa. |

It was a shitty thing to do but it's not a player's job to run after a ref to have a handball called on himself. This will definitely mar his
brilliant career but these things happen. He should probably apologize but it still wont put the Irish in the final 32.
And like I expected FIFA will do nothing

You can't expect FIFA to allow them to replay the game, because then they'd have to do it all time, which really isn't plausable.
Think about it, they'd have to allow a re-match everytime someone dives in the penalty box or little things like that. It's awful for Ireland but they just have to get on with it. I'm shocked Henry of all people did this, though. |

Unless we're talking about some kind of bribe and in that case both the team and the ref. have to be punished with fines, suspensions or expulsion, which
has happened before, mistakes by the parts involved, in this case the ref. team, are a part of the game and teams have to deal with it.
And replaying the game? Hundreds of official games are played every week in Europe alone, between national leagues, national cups, European cups and national team competitions, I can't even imagine the chaos of having to repeat games over referee's mistakes. That being said, it sucks for Ireland, the playoff was tied at that point and penalties can always go either way.

As a french myself, i'm not proud of the way we qualified.
A handball happens, any player in his position would have done the same, what is trully appeling is that the ref didn't see it, and the linesman didn't see that both Henry and Gallas were offside. It was a free kick so the linesman was on the same line as the irish defenders, he should have seen it. I'm sorry for the Irish team, because they deserved to qualify and i really like this team, but as Roy Keane said, i don't recall them complaining about or wanting to replay the scandalous Ireland - Georgia, that led Ireland to a World Cup. It's football, and sadly ref mistakes happen all the time. Maybe now that stupid Platini will consider video replays during games.

We have a great goalkeeper, we had a good chance of winning in penalties.

The thing is, Henry didn't actually do anything that isn't seen in football stadiums across the world, every single week. He broke the rules to put
himself and his team in a winning position. Players do it all the time, whether it's shirt-pulling, diving, claiming a free-kick/throw-in you know is not
yours etc. The thing about football, indeed any sport is that shit happens. And there's no doubt that the Republic of Ireland got a shitty deal, but next
week it will be someone else and the week after that, someone else. I don't remember Ireland's players complaining in their match against Georgia when
Robbie Keane clearly hand-balled in the area in an incident which led to an Irish penalty.
Not for one minute am I condoning what Henry did. It was wrong and he deserves criticism. But the level of criticism has been astonishing, especially from the English press who always seem to ignore cheating from English players. The real blame should be laid squarely at FIFA's door for allowing the situation to escalate so far. If video replays and stronger retrospective punishments are not introduced by the start of next season, I would be very surprised.
