I work at an assisted living facility and this one resident is like a grandmother to me. She is in her mid-80's and was just diagnosed with pancreatic
cancer. She is refusing any treatment since she is "ready to go". How long do you think she will have? I read online that WITH treatment, the person
has a life expectancy of 5-8 months. But without...?

I think it would depend on the person and what stage she is currently at. It's the most deadly form of cancer, I think 5% of those diagnosed survive.
Hopefully she will come around and accept to have treatment. I assume without treatment the life expectancy would be in the 3-6 month range but again it
depends how advanced it is.
Yes that's what PS had, he survived about a year after diagnosis, I think. |

What's "not very long" though? A month? 2 months? I'm just trying to see how much time I have left with her. I wanna prepare myself and not
get surprised when it actually happens.
She thinks it's a big joke. She was going to give me something as a "going away present," as she calls it. I was like...yeah not funny. She has been ready to die for a while now, but I guess she will really get her wish now. |

Sorry if this is insensitive but why would she get treatment? So she can live an extra 5 months? She's like 85 years old. |

She had breast cancer, some other form of cancer, MRSA, pneumonia, her breast removed, leg amputated, etc. She said she is just ready to go now. I am starting to see a decline already. She keeps saying how sore her whole body is, she says she throws up a lot, I see her coughing a lot, etc. It's tough to see this happen so quickly since she just told me earlier this week about it. |

TR2119 wrote: I can understand that. Hopefully you can help her have some happy moments, and make the last time she has more special for her. And you'll create some lasting memories for yourself, even though it will be extremely tough. You'll be really glad you did it, and know that you did something so wonderful for someone you care for so much.

In her 80's? I bet the treatment would be worse than the disease & for her being that age she'd rather spend her last days, weeks or months as she
is & not feeling like shit from the treatment just to die a few months later.

I don't know much, except that it's incredibly painful and, without treatment, will kill you quickly.

My uncle has it and luckily with treatment it hasn't grown, plus he has passed the month that he was suppose to be gone. Without treatment I'm sure he
would be gone by now.

Has her family thought of putting on her hospice to at least make her comfortable? If anything, she shouldn't be dying in pain.

She made me swear not to tell anyone. Every time she sees me, she tells me how much pain she's in and when the pain gets too much for her to handle she is going to take her Ambien that she has been saving up. Not good.
