Especially when it comes to humans, where our reproductive fitness isn't necessarily dependent on our biology. It is also possible that bisexuality existed prior to homosexuality and homosexuality branched off from that. You have to look at proximate and ultimate causes of characteristics, the hows and the whys. It is possible it is a gene that correlates with another trait that does get selected for. As for why, perhaps it has to do with sex being recreation and pleasurable.

I mean maladaptive in the sense that homosexuality in a world with out fertility treatments and our medical advancements most homosexuals wouldn't reproduce.

I wanted to see what other people on JJB thought and explore reasoning's, research, or any other information people on here may have had. It was a topic to pass the time last night and start discussion. I wasn't aware we could ONLY post topics where there was absolutely no information elsewhere. Maybe that should be added to the new list of JJB rules.

Posts: 6262 (11/20/2009 2:36 PM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts	I'm clearly using poor choices in phrasing, but that point was not about gay explorers per se, but a specific example how nature/environment and whatever the social structures can influence inherited traits or behaviors or orientations,etc. For instance during and right after a war: the warring societies will have more boys born than girls. Or how a woman's diet can determine the sex of a baby. Or the theory that the less time a girl spends around her father the earlier she hits puberty. The average age of puberty for girls has dropped drastically in the U.S. as divorce rates have skyrocketed and increasing the likelihood they'll spend more time around unrelated males. I don't think those are just random coincidences. I also don't think people being gay is comparable to being left or right handed like some have said. I think sexuality, regardless of orientation, is a complex combination of genetics and environment, but I do believe that "gayness" came about (that make it sound like a plague but that's not how I mean it ) because it serves some sort purpose/reason to humanity.

Just because something continues to persist doesn't mean that it serves a purpose, it just means that it has no impact on fitness so it is not selected for or against. . It is really sad the misconceptions and lack of understanding people have about evolution, genetics and science in general. However, the data I'm referencing concluded that girls in polygynous societies or societies with high incidences of divorce enter puberty earlier. In America's case increasing divorce rates isn't the cause, rather the absence or presence of the father. Due to the high rates of divorce, and women receiving custody 85% of the time, girls are spending less time around their fathers and more around a stepfather or other unrelated men in the household that might trigger early puberty.
