Not only do I now want donuts, youre experience also reminds me of why I dont like leaving the house. Ignorance drives me up a wall and I have a hard time
being cordial in the face of it, even when people truly mean no harm. I just get so irritated.

I was in a grocery store in Florida once and the cashier asked me what I was, and I was confused for a minute. Then she asked me where I was from, and I said
Los Angeles. Then she said, well where are your parents from, and I said Los Angeles. The she was like well where is your family from, and I said Los Angeles.
Eventually she got to the point and pretty much was trying to see my ethnicity and I finally told her my ancestors were from Mexico. So at the end she was
like, yeah, I was trying to figure out what you were because you look dark but you don't talk like your Mexican. I guess not having an accent makes me not
sound "Mexican."

I HATE that!!! I get so mad when people ask me where I am from. I always say "Chicago" but that's not what they're looking for. I'm not
from Mexico- I was born here and I identify myself as American! GEeez!
Now I want donuts. |

Some people have ethnic ties to Ireland, Brazil, Mexico, Armenia, etc. and some people are curious as to which one you "come from" because it's interesting to them. What the hell is the big deal? |

I've had the same experience with Indian guys, only they were asking me super innapropriate questions about my sexlife. I think Indian people must have a different culture so they don't realize asking or saying certain stuff is considered rude in western society. |

Yes, that was the birthplace of my ancestors, but I've never even been there and I definitely speak English way better than I could ever hope to speak Spanish. And because I'm so dark people automatically assume that I speak Spanish and that I'm from Mexico. But I'm not, I'm am Mexican-Americcan, but I, myself, am not from Mexico. And I'm not offended by it, but I try not to just assume things about people, and I prefer to be treated with the same respect. |

folkbitts wrote: You just reminded me of another incident. I once had an Indian cab driver ask if me what I was. This was two years ago, so I can't remember his exact words but we were having a really nice conversation and the context was him trying to figure out if I was Indian. Like he found me very relateable and wanted to know if he could claim me or something. I find the older I get the more it seems that race issues have to do with people thinking they can't relate to blacks, or whatever particular race/ethnicity they are suspicious about. And also the extreme laziness of putting one entire group in one box. My FAVORITE QUOTE ON THE SUBJECT: Sometimes, I feel discriminated against, but it does not make me angry. It merely astonishes me. How can any deny themselves the pleasure of my company? It's beyond me. - Zora Neale Hurston |
