I'm applying for a job and they are asking for 2 references.. I'm having a tough time thinking of who to use. I haven't done this in SO LONG.

Umm, if you are still in school or just out of school I would use maybe a professor or an advisor? Do you know of a family friend in that field that you could
use as a reference?

I had my a college professor and my boss from my last job as my references. but I've been at my current job for 4 years now, and I don't talk to either
one of them anymore. I have no idea who I would put if I was looking for a new job now.

I want to put my current HR manager but they specify no previous employers or relatives allowed on the application.

I wanted to keep mine to a page and highlight job responsibilities so under References it says "Available upon request"

When I was applying, I used professionals I had in the business community related to the job I was trying to get. Good luck. I hope you get it!

If they respond and ask me to fill out their separate application and it asks for 3 references, I list mine. Although, the last 3 jobs in the last few years, the companies all dissolved, so nobody is there anymore And if they don't ask for references, I won't offer up any until after an interview and I'm being considered. |

She said most candidates aren't writing cover letters, so they always get the first read because it shows they took a little more time to apply than others.. And if they provide references, it is one less step she has to do by asking for them. I thought that was interesting. |

I have a former coworker who was my supervisor, a coworker I trained, and a business owner I sometimes help out during the busy seasons.
If you can, include both a business and a personal reference. 'Previous Employers' may not mean/include people you've worked with, just the big bosses. |

That's good to know. I always do a cover letter. It's exhausting sometimes, but I do it
It's hard for my references, because one of them is my boss from almost 4 years ago, two are my co-workers from my last job and the other one alternate would be my dad. In the last 4 years, the two companies I worked for franchised and/or cease to exist, so there is nobody above me to contact from there, so I only have co-workers that I still talk to, but nobody like a district or regional manager. Thankfully, I'm a freelance makeup artist, so I really only have me to depend on and work for. |

I never put my references on my resume, but I usually give a combination of 2 former bosses, 2 friends, and 2 former co-workers. Just depends what they ask
for. Some ONLY want acquaintances, which is strange; some want two former bosses, some want one, etc.
