Posts: 11567 (11/25/2009 11:13 AM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts	Ok smart people, I need your help. Bf and I are thinking of moving out of NJ and into North Carolina. We need a change of scenery and want to start a life somewhere on our own. The problem is, I have no idea where to start. I've heard good things about Ashville, Raleigh, Wilmington, Fayettevile, Piedmont, Winston-Salem, etc. Our criteria (nice to haves) would be: a nice downtown area but not a huge city, somewhere that has a bit of change of seasons (not hot all the time), close to the nature (mountains moreso than beach, but beach is great too), etc. As far as work, BF and I are both in web design. Thoughts?

It's a college town--NC A&T, UNC-G, Bennett, Greensboro College, etc. Downtown, there's a really nice park that they just built last year. I doubt it will be too expensive, seeing as NJ has some of the highest real estate prices in the country. But I'll take a look. Thanks for all the feedback!

NW Greensboro or SW going toward High Point is preferred living areas tho. Ashville is just beautiful and has a subtle lower Manhattan feel to it but surrounded by beautiful mountain views . Great shopping and nice restaurants in both cities.

Fayetteville's downtown is definitely more family oriented, Raleigh is OK, but I would suggest Greensboro over them. If you want to be near the mountains, you want Asheville and the surrounding area. Charlotte's OK too.

Their downtown is FANTASTIC. Small shops, boutiques, restaurants, people watching, bars (even jazz) and the music center is there too. I'd bet you both would be able to find web design jobs there, however you might not make the same money as you did in NJ. I live in Charlotte and I'm a big city girl but I could live in Asheville (may move there in a few years with the boyfriend). The ONLY thing that sucks about it is it's a bit far from any beach, but that's what weekend trips are for. So....I pick Asheville.

They also have forums where you can ask questions and you'll have people either living there now (or lived there before) giving advice, experience, et c.

For a young couple, Greensboro or Raleigh is better. Winston is more of a family place too. Charlotte is good, but it's huge and you said you don't want to go to a really big city. Can't comment on Wilmington, I've only been there a couple of times and that was only to the beach.

Posts: 25399 (11/25/2009 5:12 PM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts	I live right between Winston and Greensboro, and I love it. I have 2 cities to choose from to do things! We go to the mountains all the time, and the beach is about 5 hours away. Can't beat it!
