DC/MoCo/PG is seriously like it's own STATE compared to the rest of Maryland. Seriously nothing beyond that exists. Yall are some bumpkins like shit! Yeah, I live in MoCo and never hear any of that. My relatives in the Pittsburgh area say "Warshington"...drives me nuts!

The large trashcans that you sit out by your street...he called it a "polycart". I was like A WHAT?! Also, he once told me we needed to get up, get around. I had no idea WTF he was talking about. He used to get so pissed at me.

Posts: 1660 (12/10/2009 2:02 PM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts	the town i'm from in Northeastern PA has a colloquialism where someone who is poor or dirty or low class is called a "cunnerman" or "cudderman" or "cutterman." (no one can seem to agree on the correct spelling or pronunciation.) But it's shorthand for white trash in our town. The theory is it derived from a family with the surname Counterman, a family that's been around forever and was super poor and inbred. Now I'm older, I think how horrible it is that a family got ssuch a terrible reputation they ARE local term for trashy. I've never heard it outside of NE PE. There's even a group on facebook called "I know the term cunnerman and I use it!"

Really drives me bonkers. Also now that I've been out in Jersey I here "yous guys" a lot and one employee teases me and says I say orange wrong. I prononuce it or-ange. He pronounces it are-ange.

Oh man. After your first post in this thread I knew you were from Central Illinois. That's where I'm from and I hate hearing that. My parents always say "warsh" too. As in "I just threw in a load of warsh." or "I'm gonna warsh the cars today." "Have you ever been to Warshington?" I've picked up my own little idioms though that I say that no one around here says. I don't know where I got them from though. I say "dippy eggs" for the eggs with the yolks that you can dip toast in. I also call a remote control a "clicker" and I call them "scramby eggs" and spaghetti is "sketti". My ex roommate was from southern GA and I couldn't STAND the way she talked. From her accent to her stupid words. I'm sorry I really don't like her. I used to correct her all the time and she hated it. There was one time when I was like "Illinois is Algonquin for: he who speaks correctly." She would get so pissed when I'd say that it was hilarious. The big ones I hated were "pocketbook" for purse and "buggy" for shopping cart. I also dislike a lot of the Canadian slang some of the people I went to school with used.

I thought they were saying no, but it was more like "I don't mind, sure I'll do that." It floored me until I understood, cuz the guy talking was a very helpful sort of person and I couldn't imagine why he wouldn't do this one thing. some people there did the "cokes" for all soda thing, too.

(whats going on?) I don't know if it's a Toronto thing but people will say "What are you sayin?" to ask what someone's plans are for the day. I had a roommate from Newfoundland/Labrador and he had the weirdest way of saying things. Like, "where ya to?" (where are you going?) or "where's my pen to?" (where is my pen) Half the time I had no idea what he was asking me.

We "make" groceries. Uh, what part of Mississippi are you from? I'm from the North part of MS and I've never in my entire 23 years heard someone say they were "making" groceries. Around here it's "we're going to get groceries" or "I'm going grocery shopping" As for our 'idioms' we say "down yonder" but it comes out "down yunder" Used in a sentence: I'm going down yunder to get a drink.
