So I started a diet today....and my calorie goal is 1,648 calories a day. Now as is I have no clue how I am going to eat that many calories but whichever. Now I know when you exercise you loose calories. So say for example today where I am going to a 75 min belly dancing class, say I loose like at least 350 calories in class. Does that mean I need to eat 2,000 calories today to optimize my weight loss? Im sooooo confused.

No, you want to burn more calories than you are eating. So if you are eating 1648 you want to burn more than that

Does that mean I need to eat 2,000 calories today to optimize my weight loss? Assuming that 1648 calories is how many calories you have to consume daily to lose weight, no, you don't have to eat 2000 calories. You can eat that much and still be fine though because you're still at (or under in this case) your calorie limit for the day. Does that make sense? I know Weight Watchers doesn't count calories, but I believe they also allow you extra points (which is like extra calories) if you exercise for a certain amount of time or whatever. So basically, as long your calorie total for the day is at/below your limit, you're fine. (Also, I just wanted to point out that a lot of guidelines suggest you not go under 1200 calories a day. If you don't consume enough calories, that could be a disadvantage to you when you're losing weight.) Now, if 1648 is the number of calories you need to maintain your weight, then it's different.

Well I am using livestrong.com and according to them to loose 2lbs a week I need to consume 1,648 calories a day?!?! I thought that was a lot personally.
So Kit505 what your saying is on days where I don't exercise I don't want to go over (or much under) 1,648 calories a day. Altho if I am exercising and say work off an extra 350 calories if I was to eat around 2,000 I should not be freaking out that I am going to be gaining weight? |

I don't think 1648 is that much...unless all you eat are fruits and vegetables. Usually one meal at chili's or red robin or something can amount to 1000.

If you are overweight now 1648 doesn't seem out of this world high. They suggest eating between 1300-1500 for a person already a normal weight. If you are overweight you don't want to "starve" yourself eating a much smaller amount of calories than your body needs to survive.

I think it confuses people when others tell them that they have to burn more calories than they consume. That makes it seem like if you're eating 2000 calories a day, you have to burn 2000 calories a day. That would take HOURS of intense exercise to do that, as well as be incredibly unhealthy.

You lose calories just from existing. Find a basal metabolic rate calculator online. Actually, use this:

The lifestyle diet that I'm getting accustomed to now suggests that one should consume calories according to their current weight x 10. So if you're at 140 then you consume 1400, and so on. I'm doing that right now...does that sound about right?
