Why though? Because people who drink soda are more likely to be overweight or the sugar? I still drink it, but I need to quit -mainly because I want to decrease my daily caffeine intake.

I just started developing a taste for water as a teen and never went back to soda. It wasn't something I made a point to give up.
But honestly? Don't listen to a lot of the crap those doctors spew on there. Of course most of it is true but they blow it up for ratings. They focus SO much on the weight issue when there are TONS of people that develop type 2 but don't fit the stereotypes at all. They always leave out type 1, which you can develop at any age and NOTHING can prevent it. They go on and on about how diabetes can be reversed but don't mention that type 1 absolutely canNOT be reversed and the reversal of type 2 diabetes is extremely rare. They consider being able to get off meds and managing the disease with diet and exercise as being reversed. I guess that's semantics but to me you still have the disease and are still treating it. I could go on and on but just remember that they're going for ratings with those shows. |

I used to drink at least one a day when I was a teenager.
I gave up on that years ago. I only have a few / year now. I don't really miss it either, I basically never think about it. |

I think watching Oprah is more hazardous to your health.

Diet Soda contains the same crap as regular soda, just with fewer calories.

It was in Cosmo or something, I want to say... |

AudaciousAudrey wrote:Yeah, but if you watch the shows (I admit I didn't catch the entire episode of Oprah today but I've seen others, including a show Dr. Oz did himself about it) they don't often address the fact that the diet that often leads to that weight gain is a diet that can contribute to diabetes...they just address the weight.LilBabyWithTheSundressOn wrote:I don't think it's about the "weight issue" so much as it's about the diet issue. If you like I can point you in the direction of about a hundred well controlled, very knowledgeable diabetics (many type 1 but lots of type 2s as well) that regularly get irate at the misinformation and misrepresentation those doctors feed to their audiences. |

I think they are addressing the majority of Americans who either already have diabetes or are headed towards diabetes due to being overweight/obese. Obviously not everyone falls into that category but I think since the majority of Americans are overweight, a good amount of people do.

I don't really drink it anyways. I'd just rather have water because I don't like that bloated feeling after I drink soda. On occasion, when I'm really craving soda, I'll have it.

I posted about soda the other day. I was seriously addicted. It was pretty bad. Diet Pepsi was seriously like my drug. I gave it up and after a few weeks I don't even miss it! I would die without my Crystal Light though. I don't know if Crystal Light is better or worse though!
Here's my edit: I lost 10 lbs. without even trying (which I should have been trying) and I think it was because of the soda. Most people (esp. JJB) will call bullshit, but I've been on a diet my entire life. I dropped 10 lbs. in the last month without changing anything in my diet except for drinking soda. Then again I was drinking like 3 cans a day.

I wish I drank soda so I could stop drinking soda and loose weight. I mostly drink seltzer or water.

I think the only reason soda gets such a bad rap is because of the foods that it "goes with." Like...soda and pizza...or soda and hamburgers. Those are the foods that I used to crave soda when I ate. People that go to McD's, Taco Bell or Wendy's I would say....9 times out of 10 (and I'm sure people will disagree with me on this) order a soda. That's probably where the stats come in. Even if you get a lemonade at those joints it's still full of calories.

I'll have a can every once in a while though.
