I just get a bad feeling about these particular people. I don't think it has anything to do with the fact they were a religious group. They are just shady. Several people who run orphanages turned them down because they had no paperwork, no plan, and no history of doing anything like this. They ended up going to a village and getting children from parents who thought they'd be "better off" with these rich saviors because everyone involved with real orphanages turned them away.

-2/3 of the children weren't orphans at all. They were all handpicked by the group. Some parents were told they would be able to see their children at any time, but it was for the best that they be taken out of Haiti. One (8-year-old) girl was crying, and saying, 'I am not an orphan. I still have my parents.' She thought she was going to a boarding school. -The leader, Laura Silsby, has been sued multiple times in the last 3 years by businesses for payment of services or return of goods. 14 claims from employees for non-payment of wages on her website, Personal Shopper Inc. A check of Silsby's driving record revealed at least nine traffic citations since 1997, including four for failing to provide insurance or register annually. -Their Idaho-based "church" is a boarded up foreclosed building. Silsby home has also been foreclosed on. -The plan was to rent out a 45-room hotel in Dominican Republic that would act as an "adoption agency." |

I'm so happy the police arrested these people before they got away with this. The sad part is there are people out there like this and I did read about children being kidnapped during the aftermath :-(

I know it isn't exactly the same, but are any of you the same ones that wanted the 3m/o to be taken to the States and then the UK for surgery. . . .
It is kinda sucky because they are prosecuted for this, but the Haitian gov't allowed cops to shoot to kill SUSPECTED "looters". |

You're right it's not the same thing since either that child is an orphan or his/her parents weren't told that the baby was going to a boarding school that they can visit when in reality they were being put into an "orphanage" with the obvious goal being to adopt them out.
I'm also confused as to why you think that this obvious case of child abduction has anything to do with the government allowing "looters" to be shot. |
