Actress and UN goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie has arrived in Haiti on behalf of the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef), where she is expected to visit survivors of the earthquake that devastated the region.

It is hoped that her visit will help highlight the plight of some of the earthquake's youngest victims.

Ms Jolie previously visited a hospital in neighbouring Dominican Republic, where she spoke with injured Haitians.

A Haitian charity chief has hailed Angelina Jolie as an ‘angel’ for visiting the earthquake ravaged country and continuing to focus attention on all the work that still needs to be done there. The devastating quake on January 12, killed more than 200,000 people.

The big-hearted superstar mom-of-six is about to visit the capital of Port Au Prince on Tuesday following a trip to the Dominican Republic on Monday.

Suzie Krabacher the founding President of Haiti Children (Mercy And Sharing) told RadarOnline.com: “I think Angelina is an angel for visiting the area and bringing more attention to all the work that still needs to be done in Haiti and I wish her the greatest success.”

Krabacher and her husband Joe Krabacher set up their charity in 1994 as an outreach ministry to abandoned and mistreated children in the impoverished nation. Their services have expanded now to provide food and aid to both children and the elderly, but the earthquake devastated these efforts.

Angelina flew to the Dominican Republic after a short stop in Miami where she joined Brad Pitt and eldest son Maddox to cheer the New Orleans Saints as they won the Super Bowl. She visited with Haitian children who are in the Dominican Republic to receive medical treatment as a result of the earthquake.

Tragically, Krabacher’s organization lost four children and six workers when their clinic in Port Au Prince collapsed after the earthquake. She has just returned to America from Haiti and RadarOnline.com that Jolie – who has previously visited many disaster zones as a UN ambassador – will be seeing an ‘apocalyptic situation’ when she arrives.

Krabacher revealed: “The actual city still smells like a morgue and they are trying to figure out which buildings they can pull-down and which ones can be saved. There is still a great need to bring in food and water throughout Haiti and she will have to be very careful where she is walking because a lot of the buildings are still very unstable.”
“Our organization runs three other schools in the country and an orphanage in Port Au Prince which was also damaged in the earthquake which destroyed our clinic.”

Oscar-Winner Jolie Heads to Haiti After $1 Million Aid Donation

Feb. 9 (Bloomberg) -- Actress and United Nations Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie came to Port-au-Prince today to visit victims of last month’s earthquake after announcing a $1 million donation to relief efforts.

“She is traveling to Port-au-Prince to draw attention to the continuing dire needs of Haiti and its people,” said Sybella Wilkes, senior communications officer at the UN High Commission for Refugees, in a phone interview from Geneva, where the agency is based.

Jolie, 34, will also visit the Brazilian military base in Port-au-Prince and dine with troops serving the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti, or MINUSTAH, said Brazilian Army Lt. Col. Fernando da Cunha Matos, a spokesman for the peacekeeping mission.

Jolie and her partner, actor Brad Pitt, donated $1 million to the humanitarian group Doctors Without Borders following the Jan. 12 temblor that killed more than 200,000 people and left nearly one million in need of shelter, food and water in the Western Hemisphere’s poorest country, according to UN data. The U.S. Geological Survey ranks the quake as the hemisphere’s deadliest.

An appeal for $575 million dollars in aid to Haiti from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, or OCHA, is 90 percent funded, with $517 million received so far, according to the institution’s Web site.

Hospital Visit

The Oscar-winning star  met with Dominican Republic President Leonel Fernandez yesterday in Santo Domingo, after visiting a hospital in the Dominican capital where women and children who survived the earthquake are receiving treatment.

The actress has been on more than 20 UN missions since 2001 including Afghanistan, Chad, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Ecuador, Sierra Leone, Lebanon, Iraq, Thailand, Pakistan and Kosovo.

Ahead of her arrival, Col. Ajax Porto Pinheiro, commander of the Brazilian troops in Haiti, was busy directing ten of his men to paint some of the walls and the columns in the mess hall with a warm terracotta paint “to make it more cozy.”

“I also want to put some potted plants around here to add a bit of life to the place,” he said.

Outside the mess hall, officers and privates, clad in green shorts and white T-shirts after the daily exercise practice, picked up cigarette butts and garbage from the base’s rocky ground. Inside, twenty troops worked in the kitchen to prepare a special menu for the actress: fish filet with shrimp sauce, chicken breast rolls and meatloaf.
